I don't know how you do economics but a low cost high turnover pale ale that has a large profit margin certainly seems like more of a cash grab than an expensive to produce with time invested in barrel aging. They probaby make more profit on a case of all day than one of kbs.

If you don't like the price of a beer don't buy it. If others are happy to pay the price for the beer provided, why do you care?

I don't remember imparting my "care" onto others' beer life choices.

This has gotta be the only MI beer that actually gets more expensive after it leaves Michigan.

Drank one this week and thought it was pretty good. I may circle back to bottle shop to see if any more remain...

Wait, we're seriously arguing that BB is varying from bottle to bottle within the same 4-pack?

I'm no expert on the process of bottling beer for a commercial brewery, but it would stand to reason that bottles within a single 4-pack are overwhelmingly likely to be from the exact same batch. Which means there would have to be some rational explanation for why two beers that were theoretically filled from the same batch, on the same bottling line at essentially the same time would be markedly different.

AND that rational explanation would have to be significant enough to outweigh the one variable that happens between every single bottle--the fact that taste is evaluated by a human palate.

So... I'm genuinely curious--does anyone have any theories for why two bottles of the same batch of beer would be significantly different?

I agree with you, but I'll bite.
Bacteria maybe. Capping struggles between bottling > drinking. Idk just guesses.

There's probably 11.60 reasons, but that's a pretty volatile statement.

Most likely because of what else they were drinking or eating on those days. If you're telling me that you opened two bottles on the same day and they tasted different then I have no idea why...

After posting my question nearly a month ago I started seeing it everywhere. I guess the shipments to the north 'burbs were a little delayed.

I've done a test whereby I tried a beer in the same conditions, the difference being one morning I brushed my teeth, one morning I did not: Unmistakable, HUGE difference. A beer can go from being very good, to quite undesirable actually. Food and/or drink are the most obvious answer(s) here. [I know the example I gave isn't exact, but it shows how fickle one's palate can be]

No learned that with wine, chewing gum, mints and brushing your teeth before drinking are all bozo no no's. Certain foods alter the profile also. Screwed up one night at a bar and got a sour, then tried a barrel aged beer that I knew was good. Pretty much wasted my money there.

If anyone in SE Michigan is still looking for Backwoods I just happened on some at Super Liquor IV on State Street, south of 94 in Ann Arbor. Guy at the register said they unexpectedly received more in yesterday's delivery.
