I think the main issue with SA was their proclamation that they were doing some code-date specific enjoy by beer...and how no one had ever done it before. It was pointed out that Stone had been doing the Enjoy By beer for about 3 years...so in reality SA wasn't doing anything new. The majority of the snark seemed to be directed at Jim Koch of SA for dissing the IPA style in general for years...but now hyping his IPA line. Haters can hate...but when you go on record saying IPA's are a poor style...they aren't balanced...they aren't very good...then you suddenly come out with 5 different new IPA's...well...questions arise as to the authenticity and/or passion behind said beers beyond profit margin.

The forums have changed a couple of times over the years, and even crashed once; something may have happened his old account during those events. He used to post as 1ArrogantBastard way back when.

Forgive me fellow BAs, as I just can't restrain myself. Greg's response is the reason my phrase exists. Larrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrge.

Assuming you are the real Greg from Stone I'd like to send you some homebrew, but it will be a few months before it is ready. I assure you it will not be an IPA or Double IPA, it will not be a Stone inspired beer. It will be something I like that is not commercially out there. I do believe the reason Stone was successful is that they made beer that wasn't out there, wasn't even initially liked on start up. Nobody cared about hoppy beer until people started liking it for themselves.

Sure some average joe hombrewer can probably assemble a beer cheaper...but as you say free labor...lower the cost of the beer. I'd value your time for evaluating my beer because I like criticism and I can take it. I'll be using Elderberries, more than you did in yours  I know you are cheap...have you seen the price of dried elderberries? Holy crap!

It really is an odd world where someone insults me (and my entire brewing team / history / company) in one thread, then tells me that he'd "value my time" in another. LOL. To quote your comment about one of our beers... I think I'll pass.

I don't think he was insulting your brewery team. He was making a blanket statement that hazy IPAs are lazy because it's skipping the filtration step. Sure I could be wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time.

Either way I would pass on the homebrew as well.

I enjoy many of your beers, but I really like Old Guardian. Its one of my favorites and there are not a ton of great barley wines. I actually had it a few months ago and it might be my favorite stone brew. A fellow coworker of mine that drinks craft beer, but has not had many beers like that absolutely loved it. Great job on that brew. I am hoping to try my hand at brewing a barley wine soon but have not yet.

My only complaint about the beer is the 22 oz bottle. Its obviously a big beer. Any chance it makes it into 12 oz format?

My guess is that he was just sick and tired of the snark, the anonymous posting of vitriol which so often makes the "Intertubes" such an unpleasant place to inhabit.

Too often it seems that people air their (highly subjective) criticism just to be clever, because they are in a bad mood, because they wish to feel superior, and because they can. I think the world becomes a (slightly) better place whenever we call out this behavior, and particularly when it is done by the person most affronted by it.

I'd love, and welcome the opportunity to try ANY beer by Stone. Unfortunately, my state and many others, including Wisconsin, aren't, for some reason as important as foreign countries, like Germany. I'm going to go cry in my river, now.

I just want to know why I don't see the gargoyles in Wisconsin anymore. The pale ale used to be a staple.

I know how you feel, I get a huge onion note in Tree House Juice Machine and everyone thinks I'm crazy.

That said, I've never gotten it in Sucks or Dirtwolf. Have however gotten it in batches of Enjoy By but not all of them.

I pick up an 'off flavor' in some releases of Enjoy By. I would not specifically describe it as "onion" but for my palate when that 'off flavor' is there I really do not enjoy drinking the beer. I only drink Enjoy By on draft and I always request a sample taste before committing to buying a whole glass. Sometimes I order the glass after sampling it and sometimes I don't.

    Cheers!

I get that in GF Pure Hoppiness. Tasted like drinking onion water...yet I enjoyed it.
