My wife is the "chosen one" in my household, and her dad passed many years before we met, but she says that our tastes in beer are very similar and that he would have loved the selection on shelves these days. If your dad is a beer drinker it shouldn't be difficult to start him out slowly!

I'm back with my first beer pic of the thread-

I'm getting home later than normal lately, so I missed the lighting of the candles, but it's never too late for a good beer and some classic tunes (courtesy of Woody Guthrie and the Klezmatics). Happy Chanukah!

Tonight we not only lit the candles but also have a nice fire going in the fireplace! Very peaceful. I'm going to continue the European aspect I started with (SN Vienna Lager) and tonight went with Troegs Troegenator Doppelbock. (We'll just overlook yesterday's Backwoods Bastard's non-compliance with the European aspect!!)

I like the idea of following after where our families came from, but the thought of drinking polish and Russian beers is scary.

Well... all I know is my wife's family mostly came from Austria so I'm branching out to other European areas that don't necessarily have a strict family connection but trying to hit places that have a long history of Jews. Tomorrow - Pilsner!

And why is it that Poland does not have a beer history??? You'd think that with Germany and Czech Republic nearby with good beer they would have that, no?

I think Poland was more spirits country. My great grandfather ran a tavern in Austrian Poland, but as far as I know he just sold liquor.

I continue to want to buy Israeli beer - in the past I saw Malka at Total Wine, but do not see it any more, not sure if they still distribute in Va, or even in the US.

It's transliterated from Hebrew...so it has no "proper" English spelling.

So I kept thinking about this question and then wondered about The Beer Barrel Polka... doesn't that indicate some beer history in Poland? So I looked it up. Nope! Written by a Czech and no link to Poland.

Thanks. I just don't think this has been done before- kind of an 'if you build it they will come' kind of thing. Hopefully we get more as the weekend approaches.

ETA: I figured this was implicit in my post, but it deserves to be said directly: Big Cheers to @monkeybeerbelly for starting this thread! L'chaim, even !
