I am coming to town Saturday for my wife's company Christmas party. I will have about four hours in the afternoon to burn and want to check out some of the new breweries in town. If you could only pick two or three, which ones would you suggest? They don't have to be new, it's been a long time since I've been in town.

515 is a must. I think they just recently tapped blase... Isn't there a new brewery in WDM, with a fox in the name?

Blase (single hopped Simcoe) will be tapped at 515 tonight. Maiden Iowa (brand new English IPA) will be tapped on Friday. To reiterate....515 is the must stop if you only get the chance to stop at one brewery.

Madhouse Brewing just released 2015 VIP (Vanilla Imperial Porter aged in Whiskey barrels) bottles last week too. I think it's only at their taproom right now and would be worth a stop down to get some. It's a cool 'lil brewery too and they have some cool stuff on tap that you don't fine in bottles either a lot of times.

I'm going to have to suggest you take a little drive up to Ames and visit Olde Main. Their Sodbuster is easily the best Stout made in Iowa. On the way home, swing by Maid Rite for real down home Iowa eats.

Unless something's changed in past year or so and you're actually that far north, pass on Olde Main and head north of town to Alluvial instead.

Then again if you've only got a few hours to spare around Des Moines, I wouldn't venture further out than Firetrucker in Ankeny. Alluvial is good but it's too expensive of a taxi/Uber/Lyft ride to head back to Des Moines from there.

Pretty sure he's trolling a guy from a previous thread who actually suggested that. Alluvial does have some taps at El Bait though. Anyone tried their latest batch of Lutris?

That's gotta be a troll comment.

In all fairness, Olde Main's Sodbuster is a solid beer. It's just unremarkable. Especially when it shares a zip code with OxPresso. There was a time (5+ years ago) when it probably was Iowa's best stout. But then TG BA stuff came along, and the whole craft beer scene in general exploded.

Seriously though, Alluvial is worth a trip if you can make it. In the DSM metro, only 515 is better (Confluence is close).

I forgot about Alluvial being on at EBS. I would think that hitting EBS and 515 would be a great option.

Was just in Des Moines. El Bait Shop (has Alluvial Mosaicus, really good) and 515 are absolute must stops. Bummed I missed out on Blase

Not sure if Firetrucker was a real suggestion...their beer is god awful...except that one they did with CIB

Deal breaker. Tropical burn was good/great though.

I'm pretty sure Blase isn't gone. Is it?
