Favorite Barrels for Aging Beer.

    Not sure if this has been discussed before on the forums, but what specific barrels do you guys like to see implemented in beers? Bourbon, Rye, Red Wine, American Oak, etc.?

    I seem to enjoy the sweetness and variety that different brandy's offer to beers.

    I have never not liked a beer aged in rum barrels

    Bourbon can be overpowering at times, but usually goes really well with stouts that I enjoy. Of course, those red and white wine barrels that hold lambic are great. Adds to the complexity for sure

    Whatever you do - DO NOT use a Tabasco barrel to age beers.

    I'm a big imp stout fan so I would have to definitely go with bourbon. Can't say I'm a big fan of the rye barrel aged beers though. Bourbon barrels seem to go really good with scotch ales as well.

    I had a beer that was aged in a Tabasco barrel - upon drinking it, my throat closed up and I was blinded by tears. Imagine getting sprayed in the mouth with pepper spray, swallowing it, and then getting punched in the gut. And that was the drinking part of it...not going to mention how it was on the way out...

    I really like making barrels my bitch. Specifically American Oak used for whisky. It's fun to fill them to the lip, put them away, keg the beer a few months later, and immediately put something new in. It doesn't even matter after a certain point what has been in them- the lineage of strains just makes every next move more exciting than the last.

    HAHA oh man. Sad thing is I'm down to try it. Sure there weren't ghost peppers thrown in there?? This discussion keeps reminding me of the thread about brewing with tobacco leaves. Let's get a tobacco tabasco stout going. Can't think of any combo much better...heat and nicotine:wink::confused:

    Nice Toasted American Bourbon has never did me wrong. Shit, it even holds Scotch Style Ales and tastes better than most Scotch ales....non-Barrel Aged. Kiss my ass...so what.

    I had a tequila barrel aged cake recently and it was incredible. Among the best BA beers I've ever had.

    Not sure if you were referring to this, but the folk at Tabasco sent "The Chief" a barrel when he was at Ithaca Beer Co. "Tastes Like Burning (Ralph Wiggums Revenge)" was the result; poured at EBF 2008. And it was awesome.

    You know how there's usually one liquor that you just can't quite ever enjoy, because of a bad experience with it early on? That's how rum and I get along. I am the anti-Jack Sparrow.
    That said, I bought an Avery Rumpkin a while back, and just got around to popping it a couple of nights ago. Took one whif of it and just went pale. Avery's big beers don't really hide the alcohol, and coupled with the rum characteristics it was just too much. Loved Uncle Jacob's though so I guess rum just ain't my thing.

    I think I like bourbon the most but rye and rum barrels are pretty interesting as well.

    Ever since I had the JW Lees Calvados, I've been a big fan of Calvados aged stuff...

    I think since whiskey is technically distilled beer, whiskey barrel aging is a natural fit. I've had some really solid rum barrel aged beers, though, and one gin barrel aged beer that's a personal favorite. Wine barrel aging is super hit-or-miss; it works really well for sours and saisons, but it's a crapshoot with other types of beers.

    I like subtle bourbon barrel flavors. The one beer I have had that was bba was Two Roads Conntucky Lightning which is great. However, I've always wondered if a brewery were to age their beer in absinthe barrels.

    Wine (red, white, dessert, etc.) and Scotch. I don't care what anyone says, ALL STYLES work awesomely in wine barrels, it's just a matter of choosing the correct one. Bourbon is great, of course, as is brandy, but I don't really care that much for rum barrels generally because the resulting beer always seems very hot.
