I just tried this for the first time last night. While I know this is a highly regarded beer, I found it too overpowering with spices on the nose and tongue for me (something I would have expected from a pumpkin wine). I actually had to drain pour the entire bomber after choking down just a few drinks (yes, I'm aware I just opened up a can of worms).

So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good pumpkin beer without all the spice? Pumking was my first venture into pumpkin beers, and though it has me a little discouraged, I am willing to be more open to try other varieties. Besides, I also bought the ST Pumking chalice and I really like it and would like to fill it with more pumpkin beer.

I did not care for Pumking either. I do enjoy Brooklyn's Post Road Pumpkin (I think the spices are much more subtle) and DFH Punkin. If you have a store that sells single bottles buy some single bottles and see if you find one you like. If you don't, there are plenty of other styles out there.

You're going to find some spices in just about every pumpkin ale. Some use it more than others. I feel Dogfish Head Punkin Ale is the one that tastes like an actual beer and not a dessert, so that should be up your alley..

Give Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale a try. Mild spice with decent pumpkin flavor.

Yeh, I think that the whole point of pumpkin beers are to be flavored with those "fall spices"...some variations may or may not be "spicier" than others, but perhaps pumpkin beers just are not your style...

I agree with the earlier post about tyrin to find some singles, and see if there is something you like - Saranc's fall/pumpkin is decent, same with Post Road and DFH Punkin

Well, I was thinking that when I compare Pumking to other pumpkin ales, it strikes me as sweeter and more lush/sugary as much as being more "pumpkin/holiday-spiced" - and for me, I find that the "imperial" pumpkins all go this route - heavy on the flavors and sugars. So, my recommendation to the OP is to try some non-imperial pumpkin ales. Now, I'm not a big fan of most (non-imperial pumpkin ales), because, for me, I want a decadent beer when I drink a pumpkin ale - I'm thinking Halloween and Thanksgving - candy and big eating - so I want a beer that's on-theme. But, being a beer guy, I am also compelled to drink "regular" pumpkin ales to stay informed and maintain a reference point, right?
All that blabber just for me to say: try a Dogfish Head Punkin' Ale when they show up this year. It's bit drier and more drinkable that imperial pumpkins, but it still has a distinctive pumpkin ale character.

Agreed. It is not ``squashy'' like a lot of other pumpkin beers.

All of the above mentioned and I've also found that I love most of these as well: Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout, The Bruery Autumn Maple, Hoppin' Frog Frog Hollow Double Pumpkin, Heavy Seas the Greater Pumpkin, Sam Adams Fat Jack, Elysian The Great Pumpkin, Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin. That said, my favorite is still ST Pumking!

I have never understood why Pumpking has so many fanboys. I think it's one of the worst pumpkin beers out there.

I love Pumking but Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin has a nice pumpkin pie filling flavor without the graham cracker or spices the Pumking has.

Pumking is the worst beer of all time not named Romulan Ale or Veritas 009. If you're looking for a can't miss pumpkin beer try Dogfish Head Punkin or Schlafly Pumpkin.
