Thinking of making a trip to Philly for my bday & I'm trying to decide if I should stay both nights in Philly or hit Pizza Boy/Troegs one night then hit Philly the next.

Are there any other breweries relatively close to PB & Troegs?

Also what are so must hit breweries/bars in Philly? Definitely hitting Tired Hands, F&M and Monks

Not necessarily real close, but Selinsgrove is a must stop if you are going to Pizza Boy. Figure an hour'ish but the best of them all.

Not sure what you're itinerary or mode of transport is, but personally I'd skip Pizza Boy/Troegs and do a NJ brewery tour. Spellbound/Kane/Carton can easily be done in a day and I'd say the quality of beer is higher. Carton is going to be the farthest from Philly but it's still less than 2 hours away, which is just about the same distance Troegs is from Philly.

    Either way enjoy your visit!

I'm going to suggest that Selins Grove isn't worth the side trip from PB/Troegs. On my way to Scranton a few weeks back, and hit up Bullfrog, Selins Grove, Murphys, tried for Turkey Hill but they were closed and went to Berwick instead. While multiple sources directed me toward Selins Grove, I was wholly unimpressed. Sampled the lot there and nothing beckoned me to ask for a proper pour.

Maybe the drive fatigued me, but I can't imagine detouring even ten minutes out of my way to return there in the future. Bullfrog was the best and of show, with Berwick coming in second. Troegs and PB are worthwhile stops (especially if Troegs has good Scratches on), but make sure you are familiar with the peculiarities of ordering a beer at PB before gracing their doors.

While Victory is widely distro'd, they often have pub exclusives and it's a cool space as well; near TH.

Stop at liquid hero after pizza boy/troegs it's on way to Philly and not more than 30 min detour

I have to ask...is this a beer-focused trip...or a Philly trip where you plan to make a couple stops..?

Beer focused - planned to make a trip to Tampa for my bday but I'd rather save the airfare. So I decide just to drive up to Philly

Why not stop at Pizza Boy and Troegs on your way and spend both nights in Philly? The bar and restaurant scene in the city is too good, in my opinion, to make an entire night of the Harrisburg area. Other than Monk's, Philly bars worth checking out include: City Tap House, Fountain Porter, Good Dog, Hawthornes, Johnny Brenda's, Jose Pistola's, Khyber Pass, Memphis Taproom, POPE, South Philly Tap Room, Tria, and so many others. No matter where in the city you are, a good beer bar is just around the corner. Make sure to check out phillytapfinder dot com for updated draft lists throughout the city.

I agree with TambaTime list for Philly bars. Phillytapfinder is a great beer finder resource. If you're working your way from the burbs into Philly, beermenus is pretty widely used to finding what you may be looking for in the way of great breweries, bars and beers. Good luck and have a safe trip.

So much wrong with this info -- driving south to York is way more than a 30 min detour and not at all on the way to Philly. Also, I haven't had a liquid zero beer that I've even wanted to finish.

Philly is awesome. One of the best kept secrets in beerdom. How I envy you.

You could go to troegs 1st then a night in Lancaster area. After that catch a train which runs hourly to philly. if you are up for it you could get off at parksburg or downingtown and visit victory.

but really Id say do two days in philly, theres a lot to see, do, and drink there. you can always do the central pa trip another time.

I 2nd skipping Central PA. Spend one of your days doing lunch at Tired Hands then dinner at F&M. Sure they're not really close to one another and they're a bit of a drive (hopefully you have a DD/Taxi) but both are worth your time.

Personally I wouldn't do TH + F&M on a "Philly" trip but since you mentioned them I would visit them in that order since F&M opens at 4pm most days.

Don't forget to check out other local breweries in the city such as Yards, Dock Street, Philadelphia Brewing Co, St Benjamin etc etc.

Go to the Reading Terminal and skip the cheesesteak and get a roast pork sandwich at DiNics.

In terms of a "beer hall" Frankford Hall comes to mind. Three other spots right near by Frankford Hall are Barcade, Johnny Brenda's and Fette Sau.

Correct me if I am wrong..but I am almost positive that Tired Hands is in walking distance, if not immediately near the train station...which would be able to get you to Philly..which once you are there would completely eliminate any need for a DD

True, Tired Hands is within walking distance of the train. Heck, you could hit multiple bars on the Paoli line.
