Spinning off another thread, I got to thinking how often everyone double boxes their trades. I picked sometimes in the poll because I only double box when I happen to have a box that will fit inside of another one of my boxes (I don't buy boxes, just reuse). I also added the "Depends on Size of Trade" option because I could see someone wanting to double box only if it's a small trade with high value bottles. I can't say that I receive double box jobs very often from the sender in my trading experience, but I don't trade as frequently as others so it could be it happens more often than I realize. Just wondering what the consensus is.

I pretty much double box everything unless it's a styro bottle shipper. In the case of a styro shipper, I typically put an additional cardboard layer on the inside to make it like a double wall box

Yep... Unless it is a styro, I double box above 90% of the time.... And I've double boxed styros sometimes if the exterior box is so beat to shit that it draws attention.

I never double box but if it's a rare bottle i'll use a wine shipper.

I've started to double box more just because I have so many boxes now. But so far I've never had a bottle break even without double boxing so I do it more when there is more value in the contents.

Normally I only double box when there is something irreplaceable, or something I'd have a very hard time replacing, inside the box. Otherwise single box for me.

Boxed 6 bottle styro inside a FedEx 20x20x12 is my new standard. Packing label inside the stryo box, on the outside of the styro box and on the outside of the FedEx box. Sometimes one extra shipping label in with the padding materials. "Label came off" my ass.

Double box all the time. Grab a discarded box from the liquor store (even keep the interior dividers for packing use) and pick up an outside box from Walmart for less than $1. System works for me and I'll continue to use it going forward. Only 4-5 bottles/cans to ship? Add extras

It really depends on what is in the box - I usually only double box if the bottles are rare / expensive.

Normally I just line the box with 1/2 inch polystyrene insulation sheets (cheap as could be at the hardware store) and wrap each bottle with 3 or 4 layers of bubble wrap. I find the polystyrene sheets add a lot of strength on their own, are super easy to cut to fit any box, and compress if the box is hit or dropped, so they add a lot of padding.

If it is a serious trade, I will do the box in a box trick, but put the polystyrene sheets between the boxes like a sandwich - probably overkill, but I figure there is the outside box, half an inch of foam and then the inside box before you even get to the bubble wrap. The first time I packed this way I did a test just out of curiosity.
I packed a box-in-a-box-with-foam-layer with a few cheap shelf bombers and threw it off the roof of my house. It is a 3 story town house, so it was at least a 30 foot drop and the outside box was pretty trashed, but the inner box was OK and the beer was fine.
Like I said - I save this for the irreplaceable whalez!

I always double box. It adds an extra layer of protection and helps to dampen the sound of sloshing. An added bonus - if the outer box takes damage that requires opening, the shipper will find an inner box shipping ready with a copy of the shipping label attached. I believe you can't always count on the kindness of shippers to repack your beer.
I also avoid using bottle shippers, noise makers or marking my boxes "fragile" and "this side up" - anything that brings attention to my box of homemade jerky and marinades.
I can throw my boxes across the room, drop 'em or send them down a flight of stairs and sleep well knowing you're gonna get your beer.

I always double box my first time with a new partner. Especially if I don't know where they have been and how many partners they have had in the past.

Well played... But I did say cheap!:grinning: I used a couple of lagunitas bombers actually since they are 4.50:stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah it is basically an ablative box and foam around another box. Here is a pic of one I have with me:

It is fancier foam because I used this box for a flight to Australia (I am from there) but this box was dropped into a duffel bag and took everything American Airlines and Qantas could throw at it for 30 hours without a scratch on the bottles - trusted some serious whales (at least for me!) To it for a buddy here and it worked like a charm!

As a rule of thumb, I always double box unless I have a styro or cardboard shipper to put the beers in.

I went with "depends on size". If it is a lot of weight, I always do, but I would say I do more often for the longer journeys and more expensive/hard to replace beers.

Usually only if its a one of a kind. I love trading and getting new beer but hate packaging a box for a trade. So i avoid the double box system when one will do just as well

For me it typically depends on the value/rarity of what is in the box. If it's a lot of beer or has something that I would have a hard time replacing then I am always going to double box whether it is in a Styrofoam shipper or not.

If sending cans only, I use one box. If I have any bottles in the shipment, I double-box.

I have found that double-boxing, with bottles upright, and with lots of stuffing (styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, newspaper, etc.), there is almost no sloshing sound. I use 16x16x15 outer box, and box from liquor store as inner box.

Edited to add: for some reason, I kind of enjoy packing, so the double boxing is no big deal. I'm a weirdo
