just curious what the consensus on this is. I have few bottles of 2014 Backwood bastard. I guess at this point they are nearing 2 years old. I never been a big fan of it to begin with but I recently opened one and hated it even more. Now i would hate to throw away my remaining bottles in the trash and would much rather give them away as extras if I do trades. I don't know what the general consensus is on aged Backwood bastards but would it be insulting and waste of time to include these as extras? Does it carry same negativity as giving someone old ipas? And would the same concept be applied to something like a 2-3 year old founders breakfast stout?

From personal experience, I've had main trade pieces sent to me aged (not by my request). I learned quickly to ask the year of the BA stout I was asking for before completing the trade. That being said, I've received a year old KBS as an extra, same with Backwoods. I was happy with both of them. I also got a two year old IRS once which was exciting for me as I had only started cellaring a year prior. I say if you know the person you're trading with enjoys the style, they'll enjoy a properly aged version. Just my opinion on this one though.

As with any extra, I'm happy for the opportunity to try something new and unexpected. If I don't care for any traded beer (main trade or extra), I don't hold the other trader responsible for my palate.

Any beer with a decent reputation (Backwoods bastard certainly qualifies) or even a mediocre reputation beer you think is underrated should be an acceptable extra. I view extras as a chance to share some of your beer personality and local sleepers rather than "I'll impress you with how many whales I have just laying around."

I personally really like aged backwoods, and always grab an extra 4-pack for this purpose, so I would be very pleased with it!

I would be quite happy to get any year of Backwoods as an extra. I say go for it.

Also maybe I am stating the obvious, but for me a big factor is if the trade partner can easily get said beer in their distro.
Older Backwoods I'd assume would be a pretty cool extra for someone in SoCal (though not for long) but less so if I got it.

I LOVE getting old non-IPA beers as extras or otherwise. I'm always interested in how a particular beer aged...or at least some reflection of that and you can't speed up time. Even with adjunct, it's interesting to see the changes. BA beers like Backwoods Bastard can do really nice with age to mellow out the typically hot barrel when fresh.

i'm with most here. I've actually got older backwoods bottles in my cellar, and some kbs and breakfast bottles going back as far as 2011. my opiniionn is these bottles and others like them age well, they agree with my palate.

When I trade them I'm sending something I enjoy, and hope my partner will enjoy as well. nothing wrong with that.

even if you don't enjoy them, maybe they'll appreciate the chance to try them.

yes that's exactly the reaction I'm hoping for. I personally don't enjoy backwoods that much as before but I know many still do. I just didn't want the opposite reaction and have someone write up a negative feedback on me about why I extra'ed an old bottle

If I read feedback that criticized a trade for receiving aged Backwoods Bastard as an extra, it would reflect poorly on the person leaving the feedback, not the person who sent the extra. Beer trading means accepting certain risks and you can't control how the other party will interpret your choice of extras, but I think this should be pretty far down your list of things to worry about.

I realize you are highlighting a hypothetical, but if someone drops negative feedback because they don't like an extra report them immediately - they should be banned! It is an abuse of the feedback system and is absolutely a banable (and super douchey) thing to do!

Extras (unless specifically agreed to in the trade) are completely irrelevant for feedback - it makes a mockery of the term extra so screw any douche who thinks that an aged Backwoods is anything other than an awesome piece of generosity!

Backwoods Bastard ages really well, I'll take that aged or fresh any day.

Extras are extras...I wouldn't give bad feedback to someone even if they did extra me an old IPA. It may make me less likely to trade with them again, but any extras are welcome and don't affect the trade itself/feedback.
