So I popped into one of my local bottle shops, and they have three and a half cases of BCBS. Sweet I'll grab one while I'm here....no, You have to buy a six pack or four pack of another Goose Island beer to have the privilege to buy one bottle of BCBS. I thought this was ridiculous. Does anyone else run into these shenanigans at their shops ?

I have heard of stuff like this, but it was at least for a "whale"ish beer that there were only 6 available. But I do not like any of this strategy.

I've seen it with Pliny the Elder. I suppose if they can get away with it then they will do it.

I know which shop this is...they have been promoting this on Facebook.

this is what their FB post says: "New shipment of Goose Island beers and some extra BCBS. For every purchase of Goose Island four or six pack we will offer you a chance to purchase a bottle of Bourbon County Stout. Demand is at an all time high but supply is at an all time low. Cheers!!!!!"

So its a chance to buy a BCBS...what is that like a raffle....ha???

Santa Clara Liquors, that place already started rubbing me the wrong way with the incredible amount of old IPA's on the shelves

It would appear that this is the crux of the issue.

Was just reading the BC price check thread and saw another person say this. There's even a worker from a store doing this who talks about it! Fucking absurd and another reason you shouldn't even consider buying AB Inbev beer.

I walked into a local bottle shop and asked if they were getting any of a rare beer around here in, he said yes.

I called back the next day and asked, and he said yes.

I walked in the day it was supposed to arrive. Only when he realized what I was waiting for did he tell me he was saving it for the customer's he sees the most. So not only did he lead me into believing it would be open for all customers, he completely discredits any college students who may not be in town, or anyone who buys from the other employees.

    I haven't been back since.

You want the shop to get BCBS next year? They do that by selling enough GI this year. Standard arrangement by which distributors reward retail outlets with hard to get beers.

You don't like the deal, shop elsewhere.

Did you offer to buy some of the old IPA if they would let you buy a bottle of BCBS!?!

    I kid, I kid.

    Cheers!

Local place has a 2 bottle limit, and 5-6 cases stacked up as of a couple days ago. I can find BCBS sitting around various places including one locally selling for $9.09. ETA- everywhere else is one-bottle limit.

Back when it was a bit more difficult to get, a place near me was selling singles of Zombie Dust for $6 EACH, and you had to buy a FFF bomber or sixer to earn the privilege to buy one . On top of it all, the cashier, who was also the beer manager who put this policy in place, bragged to me that he scored a sixer of ZD for himself at another shop for $12.

Needless to say I walked outta there without buying anything. Luckily that dude is no longer the beer manager there and they don't pull that crap anymore that I'm aware of.

A shop here in Chicago required a 12 pack purchase. 4/6 pack is not too bad.

Buying a Goose Island 6-pack was required in order to get 1 Bourbon County here as well. Two of the three stores I was able to buy from went this way. I got caught up in it and did it, but my wife and I agreed next year we will not do so. We love the beer, but really can't support this kind of treatment. At least I hope we can maintain that next year....

Except that such an arrangement is not unique to GI or ABInBev owned stuff.

A lot of other BAs experienced this. I refuse to shop in one of this places with this kind of policy to special releases, but I can understand the practice from the store's point of view. Not saying this is you but they could have a ton of hunters in their store once a year for BCBS or another special release but never come in for anything else, so why not get paid this time that they do draw hunters in their store. That being said it would be shitty if they flexed this policy on regulars. I would be crazy frustrated as a store owner to keep craft on the shelves that never get sold only to be criticized that I have old beer when somebody takes notice, but hey get hit up only for special releases by ppl I never see, especially with releases where my store's alloment is based on sales of regular stuff. Not saying this is you by any means but if you are a regular and this is being pushed upon you it is time to get a new LBS.
