So for the second time in a couple weeks, I bought a beer & was deceived.

This time, it was Spike & Jerome's, a collaboration between Terrapin & Brasserie BFM SA. On the label, this beer clearly says "Barley Ryne". Brewed with rye, aged in rum barrels. I'm in!
Instead, what I get for $7.99 is 33cl of sour, undrinkable, acidic, vinegary shit.

Brewers: if you're going to brew something sour, put that information on the bloody damn label. Because as it is, I won't buy anything from any of these two breweries again, because they either have nuclear-level quality control problems, or they dishonestly left the "sour" off the label. Either way, I hate wasting money on terrible beer, especially when I feel like I've been railroaded.

This is why I check reviews at the store if I haven't heard of something before if I'm going to spend $8 on a 33cl bottle.

Sounds like quite the polarizing beer. Definitely a misnomer based on the reviews I've just read. Can't say I would have felt terribly different from you had a graded the beer based on style.

I don't think the beer in question was intentionally soured, at least that's the info I got. In either case, it should have been re-labeled as something other than a Barley Wine. If rated to style it'd get a negative score.

Yeah, honestly, I don't care about rating to style. If they'd called in a barleywine & it'd been a really good IPA, I'd be delighted.

If based my purchases on reviews I'd have missed out on some damn fine beers over the years.

True, but some people dig the intense vinegar thing this beer has going on. Hence the need for some sort of accurate label/category to describe what's in the bottle.

I'm not saying judge off the score because then you will miss out in beers that you may like more then everyone else. If I love a certain flavor I will buy a beer no matter how much it gets hated on. Conversely if I know I don't like a certain flavor and it is mentioned in almost every review then I'm not going to buy that beer no matter how much praise it gets.

I can't imagine it wasn't intentionally soured. Every beer Jerome has ever made is sour, as was the BFM version of the same beer. It's definitely deceptive labeling, though, especially because it's a spirit-barrel beer. Wine barrel-aging almost always leads to souring, so I think it's less important to point it out.

That's exactly what I thought when I looked at Jerome's beers - souring seems to be their thing, so I'd bet that this was intentional. Which is shitty.

And I'm older than most of you punks. I wouldn't be able to yell at any of you to get off my lawn if I had my face buried in a stupid smart phone.

I was told it was a sour beforehand, so was intrigued. They didn't tell me it was so bad (it is).

Yep, it's a pretty wretched beer, and I love sours, including really acetic Flanders Reds. This...was something else.

Is it bad that as I read the name of the beer, I wondered why they didn't continue the racist idea throughout the entire name and call it "Bar-rey Ryne?"

When I read "Brewed with rye" I said "Ooohhhhh... my bad."

Had the same experience with Marin Brewing's Barrel Aged Old Dipsea. It was a brett BOMB for $12.99.

I sent a e-mail to them and their reply stated that when that happens, they enjoy the additions that the brett brings to the beer.

Of course no offer to make good on selling a bad and mis-labeled product.

Needless to say, they won't be receiving any more of my business either...

Had the original version in growler, freaking delicious sour beer, the bottle not so much, still good in a flanderish way.

Wish there was some way we could all find out the general characteristics of beer before we buy it, some website that could post that info and we could just look it up. Hmm, maybe someday.

I'm trying to understand what's so great about hating a category of beer. I hate wits, but it's no difference to me if others like them.
