Good evening LNBA!! Coming to you from a Country Inn & Suites in Orangeburg, SC this NYE on our way back home to Florida!
Had a great time visiting friends and family these past few days.
My brother in law that hasn't spoken to me or my wife in about 10 years stopped by and apologized to her! I am not so quick to forgive...yet; but I am happy for her!
So a stop off at Sheetz for gas and dinner and I find some Hoppyum IPA in the beer fridge! Of course I get the "look" from my wife! Yeah I need to buy it! Never had any Foothills and can't get it in FL!!

It was a little rough for me today, leaving my Pops again, and missing my Mom. Here's to hoping 2016 is better than the end of 2015!

    Cheers!

Good evening BA, hope everyone is enjoying their NYE beer lineup. I drove back home today, I always prefer to spend some time here instead of away before work starts again on Monday(also beat holiday traffic back here). I didn't make an Ohio haul at all during the week; so I swung by Acme/Mustard Seed in Montrose/Fairlawn on the way back, since it is right off the freeway. Made a case of mixed bombers, mixed 12 pack, and 2 meads. 200 bucks, so not too bad :wink:.

Pre-review mead: Bardic Wells Bardic Red. Cherry session cyser. This was awesome! Huge tart and juicy cherries; with medium-full honey sweetness; and balanced sweet/tart red/green apple complexity. Some additional notes of peach, orange, lemon, and floral from the honey; with subtle earth and spice on the finish. Really great balance of tartness and spice against sweetness on the finish; with a slightly puckering apple acidity as well. Semi-crisp carb, with minimal warming as expected of the 6% ABV. This was completely delicious! As far as all of their cysers, this is right on the same level of balance as the Peach and Ginger variations. The rootbeer spiced one was a bit too puckering on apple presence, but was still damn good and drinkable due to the high carbonation. The peach was the best overall, just because of the huge presence of tangy fresh peaches that dominated the flavors. I'd say this cherry one is #2.

    Reviews:

Wow, this was outstanding! Head retention and lacing were insane. Aromas and flavors of big lemon zest, orange peel, peach, mango, strawberry, pineapple, and pine hops; with balanced chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, and light smoke/charred malts. Good amount of pine/roast/charred bitterness; with a nice dry finish with moderate hop stickiness and light roast malt chalky/breadiness in the mouthfeel. Very drinkable and smooth as expected of 5.1%. Clean lagering with zero esters or off flavors. I did not read the can when I bought this; I expected a Schwarzbier, but it is actually a Black IPL. Really loved it. Great hop complexity with a balanced black lager character; very robust for the ABV too.

Damn good Brown! Aromas and flavors of big nutty dark roasted coffee; with caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, and light chocolate/cocoa malts; with a touch of herbal hop presence as well. Light herbal/roasted coffee bitterness; with a great malt/bitter balanced finish with light-moderate bready creaminess and slight coffee/roast malt chalkiness in the mouthfeel. Zero complaints at all. This strikes a really great balance between the cold brew coffee and classic nut brown flavors of the base beer. Definitely wouldn't mind picking up a full 6er some time in the future. Same with all of the cans I have had from Perrin thus far(Blackberry IPA especially).

Damn good robust porter! Aromas and flavors of dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, and light smoke/coffee; with some light-moderate lemon/orange citrus and floral hop notes. Light-moderate floral hop and roasted bitterness; with a great bittersweet balanced finish; with a moderate creamy/silky and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel from the roast and hop presence. Aromas were pretty muted; but the taste was very robust and made up for them, really great mouthfeel too. Zero complaints.

I've been running a 2 year age/drink cycle with the Bruery Anniversary beers, but not yet had it this year, so here is 2013. Wax was really brittle and nearly disintegrated when I took a knife to it. Anyways, absolutely mind blowing! Aromas and flavors of HUGE raisin, plum, fig, date, apricot, apple, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, coconut, butterscotch, leather, tobacco, bourbon, toasted oak, and light chocolate. Balanced bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish against sweetness; with light-medium carb and full bodied creamy/silky/slick mouthfeel. Zero cloying sweetness; warming finish with minimal booziness; very smooth slow sipper. I feel like the 2 year age regimen is a good idea; with the solera and BBA effect of each vintage, they have all been slowly climbing in ABV. Fucking insane beer as expected!

This is every bit as amazing as I thought it would be. Smells like a vanilla shake. The alcohol is still there, but so is that vanilla taste. Fucking reminds me of an adult Mr. Softie black and white shake. I get that rye up front, but, god damn if that finish ain't smooth as hell. Absolutely amazing.

Happy New Years to everybody. Cheers.

If Clifford Brown (great work with Art and Sonny) and Max Roach (seems like he played with everyone) are involved I am in! I have always leaned more instrumental in my Jazz, but respect those who have the pipes.

Chocolate up front, not too thick but pretty smooth. Flat but slightly bitter aftertaste.

I "discovered" Hoppyum while in NC a few months ago. Everyone has their IPA favorites but this one has become my IPA favorite. Luckily, I can get it here in Richmond.

Yup- I was just explaining to my son as I was posting that sometimes when a flame burns that brightly, it doesn't last too long. But, damn, that first album was as good as it gets.

If you go back and listen to some of the Rocket From the Tombs music prior to the Dead Boys, it becomes clear just how much Cheetah Chrome helped define that whole sound, and hasn't gotten nearly enough credit for it. He's up there with the Asheton's, in my eyes.

    Cheers!
