I spent my beer drinking youth sucking down lagers, as that was what was generally available at the time (1978-1983). I tended towards the local regional breweries over the giant national breweries or imports, drinking Ortlieb's and Schmidt's out of Philly and National Bohemian out of Baltimore (also some genesse, some Rilling Rock and some Schaefer, which was available for 25 cent shorties in New Jersey). Lager was pretty much it, unless you got a dark lager import. There were however a still few outlier's that harkened back to the old days of brewing. If, as Cher would say, I could turn back time, here's a few beers from back then I'd like to taste and explore:

    1. Genesee 12 Horse Ale
    2. Ballantine Ale - I remember sipping this and thinking "Yuk"
    3. Ortlieb's Boar Head Stout - only available on tap, at the brewery
    4. Schoenling's Little King Cream Ale
    5. Schlitz Dark

And speaking of Little King's, I think its definitely time to bring back the pony bottle (7 oz.)

Did you search the BA beer database for these beers? I'm pretty sure that I've seen Little Kings still being available, although I doubt that the Schoenling name is still on the bottle. I know that the Ballantine IPA is still available because I bought a bottle recently in Florida.

Old Vienna (Canada) used to get three 7-oz splits for a buck at this bar in my old neighborhood in Buffalo
Goebels (may have spelled it wrong) used to swipe these from the old man down the street after shoveling his sidewalk
Piels, Koch's & Koch's Holiday beer...reminds me of what my old man used to drink

No, it was bottled. Here's Joe himself with his portfolio at the time, and a label (the neck label read "Boar Head").

I think I still have the cardboard box for the case I bought. :grinning:

Still available - owned by the new "Christian Moerlein Brewing Co." (which owns a number of old Cinci labels)
http://www.littlekingsbeer.com/main.html Was contract-brewed at The Lion last I heard.

A beer that MillerCoors brews for Pabst is still labeled "Ballantine XXX Ale" --- but the liquid inside sure ain't it. :slight_frown:

Genesee revived 12 Horse Ale in a mixed stubby bottle pack a few years ago- it sure didn't taste like the 12 Horse Ale of the 1970s.

granted i'm still young, i do remember what my fridge in college was full of.

my 2 best friends and i shared a house for 3 straight years of school and it was heaven!!
each of our mini fridges was full of natty light and either Genny lager or Genny cream. then our main fridge was full of natty light, Olde English, King Cobra, Genny lager, Genny Cream and our freezer had Bacardi Limon and 151.

i do still keep some Natty Light and Genny Cream in the fridge just for chugging and old time's sake.

Beers I drank in the early 80s, but would love to try again with a more <ahem> experienced palate-
    Aass Bock
Lowenbrau and Lowenbrau Dark (the Miller version)
    Schaeffer
Guinness Extra Stout of that time

Beers I'd love to try in their original incarnation-
    Prior Double dark
    Genesee 12 Horse
    Ballantine IPA
