I have a regular trading partner that we swap two 64 oz growlers back and forth. The packing on them is a pain in the ass. Does anyone know of anything that works well and relatively easy for packing and shipping these bitches? Haven't had any trouble with any breaking. We did have a leak, but that was a result of crappy growler caps. I'm just loooking for an easier way to package these, l want to work smarter, not harder! Cheers! Dave
after shipping a ton of them, have not come up with any break throughs. At work there are some cardboard rings that are 1 inch thick that I tape them in that takes all the fear of breakage out of the equation, have nothing for leagage. I try to let the growlers come up to room temp before packing, tape the cap very well, and pack very well. Good luck, its by far my favortite way to drink beer.
I always suggest this whenever growlers are mentioned, so I suppose it must be mentioned again; Rubberized Splicing Tape! It is designed for outdoor electrical splices, so it forms a watertight seal, only sticks to itself (so it leaves no residue), and it is available at any decent hardware/home improvement store. Usually costs $3-$6 per roll. The stuff is great. If I ever remember, I'll do an experiment with a growler being heated on the stove top with an untaped growler as a control.
I like using those popcorn Christmas tins (perfect size) filled with packing peanuts. Tape the lid of the tin, then put in a box for shipping.
I also used rubberized splicing tape to send a growler to huadog. Unfortunately it was missing a few ounces when it arrived. I even made sure to press it in between the cap and glass to make the tightest seal possible. I think the tape might expand in the heat too? Not really sure but thought I'd share my experience as well...
The best way to do it is to cut a growler shaped spot in a 6-12 bottle shipper. It takes up only 4 bottle slots, so there's still room for bottles and/or another growler.
The couple times I've sent growlers, I've just electical taped the lid down...being very generous with the tape. Then, I've always wrapped it up in bubble wrap and stuffed the whole thing in either a box for itself or in a garbage bag taped shut. Then that box/bag goes inside another bigger box. Haven't had any issues yet. But, I'd definitely reccomend plenty of tape around the lid along with a double packing.
