Good afternoon, all! Happy New Trappist Dubbel Sunday, and a "Thank You & Welcome Back" to @cavedave for getting things off and running today. I've been putting off trying this one, so I decided to pick one up for NBS. I've had Rochefort 8 (Tripel) and 10 (Quadrupel), so I'm looking to "hit for the cycle" here with Rochefort 6. Let's crack out the #ProperGlassware and get right to it!

This pours a hazy, dark orange with some sediment visible. A good two fingers of white head that recedes without much lacing, leaving a nice, thin white island of foam on top of the beer.

The aromas and flavors are not quite as assertive as they are in 6's big brothers. Dark bread predominates on the nose, with supplemental aromas of banana, yeast, spice, and dark fruit. The feel was also lighter than that of the darker and heavier 8 and 10. It is also light on the palate, with malty sweetness, a little bitterness and alcohol warmth, and a touch of clove-like spiciness and astringency on the finish. I had this with crispbread, nuts, and a couple of different cheeses (Henning's Caraway Cheddar and Kerrygold Dubiner with Irish Stout), but I don't doubt that it would pair well with a variety of foods.

Brasserie de Rochefort becomes the second brewery whose entire current lineup I have sampled. (The other is Old Legion, an Iowa brewery whose only product is Big Gun Lager. I'm sure it'll make its way onto WBAYDN one of these days.)

Do it! Drink it at slightly below room temp...59-62 degrees. It has a pronounced Passion Fruit vibe that is damn enjoyable. Well atleast to me!

Back for a double dip on this NBS with this unexpected find at a bottle shop today and this is Sebago Brewing BBA Barley Wine. What a great packaging idea with 2 12oz cans stacked together and wrapped. Beyond the unique packaging the beer is more than solid IMO.
This beer poured a dark brown in my snifter glass. There was a very thin tan head on the top. The nose tells of the barrel aging with some nice malt overtones, caramel and a nice sweet finish. The taste follows the nose a little bourbon with the nice rich malts and the sweet caramel finish. The mouth feel follows the rest of this beer nice and smooth. I was really surprised by this beer and hope to find a few more cans. It is great now and IMO should age beautifully.

:flushed::rolling_eyes: You just reminded me I've had a bottle of this that's just sittn" here! I'll have to check it out! From your review, it seems like it may be like a few of the "pumpkin" brews I tried this past fall (nuttn' special). It may just end up being a "tick?" :slight_frown:Oh well! Chalk it up to experience, eh?:grinning:

    CHEERS!

Hello, NBSers. After getting kicked in the nuts again by my Vikes, I decided to sample this coconut-inspired porter.

In the interest of full-disclosure, there are two foods I really don't care for at all: green peas and coconut. So I approached this with some trepidation, but after seeing this posted on WBAYDN literally 14,284 times, I had to try it.

A bit to my surprise, I'm really enjoying this. The coconut is really present, especially on the nose, but the taste also has strong cocoa and chocolate flavors to co-mingle very nicely with the coconut. My only complaint is that it's just a tad thin, but overall, it's a really nice sipper on a frigid Minnesota evening. Rated 4.08 here:

Well as a person said as we were walking out to our cars after the Vikings game "The Vikings never fail to disappoint", and they didn't fail to disappoint.

So on to New Beer Sunday
    [IMG]

Jack Pine Brewery Fencline Pale Ale- 5.4% ABV

Darker golden in color, with minimal head to it. I get some delicious smelling hops in the nose, which is inviting me to take a taste, so I will.

A fairly mellow pale ale, but there is some hop flavor to it. Nice and refreshing, a good way to end this sucky football day - Damnit Redskins, can't you beat up the Pack to ease the pain?

    3.7 out of 5

    Edit
A little retro to end my post

Good late afternoon NBS'ers. This one is a bit special to me. My dad used to listen to this album in the late 70's when I was a kid, it grew on me and eventually led to me getting a trumpet for christmas in 6th grade, and I totally sucked at it, was told by a music teacher to pick a different instrument. I guess we can't all be Miles, not even close. I did switch to guitar and tried to be Eddie Van Halen, did a little bit better:wink: Will have to save one for dad when he visits. I am actually excited to combine the world of music with it's drinkable homage.

I let this sit for about 15 minutes, since it felt pretty cold. Poured a jet black with a beautiful but thin tan ring on the surface. I got a lot of coffee, cocoa scent, some vanilla and the honey sticks out nicely. First sip: Again, coffee, cocoa, the roasty malts and it all comes together with the honey. I am not really a honey fanatic, but this is done to a close perfection. There is something there also I can't put my finger on, and I am guessing it's the Gesho root, which I've never had but if indeed it is what I am tasting toward the end, it makes for a wonderful finish. I am glad I let this sit, as I am working my way down the glass, I am getting more of the honey and coffee coming together. The booze is well concealed but it also feels quite solid. This is not a mud stout bomb, but it's perfect middle is the right amount for this to be a sipper, which, if you pair with the album, it should be a sipper. Overall, this is an outstanding beer, and am very happy with the wonderful flavors, uniqueness, concept and tribute that this beer represents. I am not very familiar with Dogfish Head's stouts, but this one is a winner for sure. Cheers!

#2, this "Hefeweizen" from Surly for their 9th anniversary.

Strike one: improper glassware for a hefe. But in my defense, if this is a hefe, I'm Brad Pitt (and Mrs. O will assure you I am NOT Brad Pitt).

It has hefe characteristics - banana, clove, effervescence. But the banana is MASSIVE, as is the clove, and the effervescence lurks in the background, behind the char, which is ginormous. I absolutely love this, but it's more a dunkelweizen than a hefe. For me, a hefe is a "chugger" on a warm summer day after you mow your grass, and a dunkel is a sipper on a chilly fall evening, sitting around a campfire. This is a sipper - chugging would be a crime against nature.

Whatever it is, I love it. Rated 4.23 here:

And time for the final Gose of the day! Omnipollo Bianca, a Gose-style ale brewed with mangos and lactose added.

22 oz bottle, labeled 6% ABV, poured into a slim pint glass

A- Slightly hazy golden straw color with a small white head.

S- Slightly sour, limes, dank hops, some mango, hints of salt.

T- Sour, limes, some tropical fruit and mangos, faint hoppiness, taste like it was maybe dry hopped with Simcoe, lactose is mild but bring a nice balance to the beer. Salt is not really noticeable at first, but lingers as a slight bite to the after taste.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A really cool take on a Gose. Mango is fairly mild, but works in this. Even at $11 a bomber I would be happy to pick this up again.

Feel Bianca might not be the most fitting to the style, but it is great. Kind of reminds me of their raspberry IPA.

Decent flavor, nice balance...roasted grains and chocolate sweetness...nice taming of the alcohol presence...

Greetings from the great northwest where we are celebrating what can only be described as a 'lucky' win for the Seahawks. This must be what it's like to be Steeler fan?

We went to the theater last night and saw 'In the Heart of the Sea." So I chose Sea Monster Imperial Stout for NBS.
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/199/46188/

A full flavored, boozy stout. Not real drinkable. Might have been a good choice had the Seahawks lost?

The movie was much the same. Rich overwhelming computer graphics with a predictable storyline.

So winter drags on. We are spared the frigid temps west of the Rockies. I brewed a spring ale yesterday, Beire de Mars, ought to be in the first of March.

    Happy Trails!

Cracking a bourbon barrel pumpkin ale before the season gets too far away. I am familiar with Avery's bourbon and rum barrel pumpkin ales, but not something in the lower ABV range like this. Very nice. Pumpkin isn't overwhelming at all. Really nice spices dominate, but bourbon coming through. A tad bitter on the back end. Sweet up front, and very warming. Good mouthfeel. Cheers!

I really enjoy barleywine, and this has all the makings of a great one-strong golden orange colors, bordering on brown. Minimal carbonation and lacing. Last glass is a particulate parade. Smell and taste are strong in barleywine similarities, but there's a ton of barrel aged presence. Certainly enjoyable, but I think it could have done with more age to soften the barrel properties.
