So I'm headed to Atlanta this week and will be bringing growlers back with me (hopefully) and since I'll be packing them in my checked baggage, can any recommend how to pack these to prevent spillage and carbonation loss?
I've traveled with growlers from all over the US and even once in Europe. My best advice is to put some tape over the screwtop or if it's a swing top to use a ziptie. Then put each growler in a garbage bag, that's airtight. THEN bubble wrap the growlers. It might seem like overkill, but it will help ensure a safe flight.
If you're flying Southwest, they have some "reusable air bags" that you can purchase for 5 bucks each. they work like a charm and they will fit a growler no problem. I discovered them bringing back 2 cases of Three Floyds back in Nov when they told me I didn't wrap them correctly. Otherwise, I think ziplock bags and bubble wrap should work.
I would highly recommend Wine Check bags. It is an investment but if you travel regularly they are the best solution. I have taken growlers back a number of times (including cross-country flights) with no other precautions. Never have had any problems.
After my last trip to Treehouse, I packed nine 16oz cans and a 2L growler into my carry on and checked it. Electrical taped the hell out of the cap, and wrapped it in many layers of high quality bubble wrap. Tied two garbage bags around the result. A layer of bubble wrap around each can, as well. Clothes strategically placed around the beer. Worked perfectly. Just make sure you go overboard with the padding, and don't let anything jump around inside the suitcase. Oh, and wear your best clothes/sportcoat on the plane to avoid damaging them in case disaster strikes. Good luck!
I work at the airport here in the San Francisco, I would ship it back home rather then pack it in luggage. The bag pushers have no love brotha hahaha cheers. nice profile pic !
i hear that if you wrap them in towels then place them in a home depot bucket(3 to a bucket then place them in the bag it should be alright. Never tried it myself, but heard others do it with huge success. Good luck!
