Say you're at a bar and see a draft option that really tickles your fancy. However, after ordering your beer the bartender lets you know that you kicked the keg, leaving you with a glass half full. Are you entitled to a free beer or a discount?

I've seen this happen with all possible outcomes but when I witnessed someone order a pour of Vanilla Rye and the patron received half a fill, the bartender told them they were lucky to have gotten the last of it and still charged him full price. At that point does rarity play a factor into what the outcome is?

Few things in life are an entitlement. Free beer isn't one of them.

Entitled? No. But most bars follow the unwritten rule of a free beer when the keg kicks.

Wait, you've seriously seen cases where somebody is charged full price for a half pour? I wouldn't think twice about walking out without paying my bill and never returning.

I've had a few occasions on which I've kicked the keg, in some I've received a small pour of whatever is left for free in other cases I've just been told that the keg kicked - I'm fine with either one.

I'm definitely not entitled to a free beer. However, I don't agree with a bar charging someone full price for half a fill. I don't care how rare the beer is, that's a dick business move.

I've never paid for a beer that was not a complete pour. I'm not entitled to a free beer but they shouldn't be able to charge me for the full beer.

Charging full price for a half pour is wrong, but no you don't deserve it for free.

If you pay for a full pour, that's exactly what you should be getting. Not really an issue of "entitlement" though.

I'd say you most certainly should not be charged full price for half of a beer. I'd be fine being charged a fraction, but would obviously prefer free

Not entitled but it's appreciated if the bartender throws one your way

I've kicked the keg at three different locations; 2 breweries and 1 beer bar/bottle shop. On all three occassions, the pours were on the house.

It seems like it's one of those unwritten rules but I wouldn't put it past a newer bartender or cheapskate to not abide by it.

Entitled, no. But it would be good customer service to either discount (in relation to the % complete) or offer some sort of freebie though. Perhaps even in the bar's best interests. There's probably some kind of regulation against charging full price for an incomplete serving anyway? I'd rather pay a discount for less than not have them not serve me anything if given a choice.

I was at a place where they just gave me the partial pour since it was clear I was going order something else. That bartender got tipped very well.

Never been charged for that half pour in all my years, but no, don't feel entitled to a free pour.

If it is a half a beer, you should be entitled to half price. If I was the bar owner, I would give the patron that pour. It is a let down to the patron to only have half of what he/she wanted available. I feel letting them have that half glass curbs the disappointment, and may encourage them to come back.

You're not entitled to it, but a good bar will usually not charge you for it or at least not full price

My frustration would be that any bar cheap enough to charge you for the few oz in your glass is probably going to screw you on %. I would say that the rule is that if the keg kicks, it's a free beer and the customer orders another after.

The real thing that makes me sob is when a bartender kills a keg, says "sorry, we're out" while pouring it down the drain. Nooooo!!!! I would have drank it!!!!

Thats what I was thinking... I might not walk out, but I'm not paying for a full beer without putting up a fight. However, if you got a full beer you pay for a full beer.

I expect to pay for what I ordered. Full glass, full pay. Half is half.

Having said that, I feel thankful that on a few occasions I did get the last pour of a keg for free. On one of those occasions, it was Parabola.:grinning: Made sure to leave a real nice tip.

I'm not entitled to anything, but the bartenders at places where this has happened to me usually just give me whatever kicked for free then let me pick another beer for a full-price full pour.

What would I expect? That I would pay for what I received, if it was drinkable. A half-pour should equal a half price.
