Rare is good but its price tag is what makes it high.

There was a time, when Rare first came out that there was no way you could trade it for a BT '09

Still probably can't, but I man I love Rare.

I have a rare in transit right now to a trade partner and on its way to me is an 09 BT. Both boxes should be landing on Friday.

Haven't had 09 BT yet, but can tell you that 10 was way better than 11 and first bottling of chocolate rain (based off of 09 BT?) was substantially better than the newer bottling...from my perspective at least.

I've heard that everything old is much better than everything new.

I just like that beer nerdism is exactly like indie rock nerdism in this regard. This is my favorite image on the subject (bearing in mind that my name is Pete and I used to be into indie rock as hard as I am into beer now).

Their older stuff was MUCH better.

    09 > 11 >10

I liked the 2011 better than 2010, but the 2009 was by far the best. It would take a lot to trade for an 09, but if you can stomach giving up that much beer you will probably really enjoy the beer.

I didn't have them all right next to each other, but I don't really think there's as much daylight between the various BT vintages as many others seem to.

I did have them all right next to each other, and I (mostly) agree. Though, I personally go 10>09>11.

On the bright side (for you), I'm pretty much the only one on the face of the earth (read: BA) that prefers the 10 to the 09.

I haven't had (nor do I have) either, although I did enjoy '11 pretty hardily. Not nearly as much as various BA DLs though.

Yeah, I only traded one BA Dark Lord (2011 Brandy) and that was for the 32 oz. growler of Apple Brandy Hunahpu's. No regrets there.

EDIT: Though Black Tuesday is up there for me. Maybe not quite on par, but up there.

I traded a Battle Priest for one O' dem with an awesome RB guy that apparently loves mead. Also landed a Brandy Vanilla DL if we ever decide to taste/go golfing again. *prestige*

the main thing about having them side by side is that you are drinking different vintages. i had the 2010 on it's own and then side by side with the 2011 and i loved the 2010 both times i had it but the 2011 adjacent to the 2010 seemed pretty hot (duh).

however i had the newest bottling of chocolate rain not too long ago and was pretty impressed, but when i had the first bottling i was literally floored by how amazing it was. i don't know if the age had anything to do with it, but the flavors just seemed to be perfectly blended. not 100%, but isn't chocolate rain BT with cocoa nibs and vanilla? the first bottling being based off of 09 BT, the 2nd off of 10 BT? after tasting that first bottling of chocolate rain, it really had me curious to try 09 BT. people definitely do say that 09 BT is a different animal than 10, but can't really comment until i've had all (preferably side-by-side).

I'm with you. I wasn't that impressed with the '09 when I first had it (thought it was waaay too hot). But the '10 struck me as much more balanced with a lot more complexity showing through the booziness.

pretty impossible as people's palates change/evolve/devolve over time. there is no true way to capture your thoughts on what something tasted like a year ago. just see all the threads every year about hopslam and nugget nectar and <insert annual popular release> where people say how last year's seemed much more x than this year's.
