I'm very new to the SE Michigan area and just visited Kuhnhenn this week with a friend. All I keep hearing is I need to track down some BB Plead the 5th but didn't find any posts about release dates in this forum. Can anyone point me in the right direction for time of year/details about release? Is it brewery only, ticketed, raffle, etc.? Thanks for the help
It is brewery release only at their 4 Elf Party in early December each year. It's all sold that day, so if you want some now you'll have to trade someone for it.
Do a search of this forum for the 4 Elf thread and you'll be able to read what 'pain' you have to go thru to get some of this excellent beer. Edit: It used to be that if you go to the brewery on a Saturday (Sunday too?) and take a tour of the brewery you will get a sample of this beer in the VIP taproom after the tour. I don't know if this beer is still available on these tours or not.
It isn't the hardest thing to pick up in a trade as if you go to the release you can buy 2 cases per person - people who have some, generally have lots. I like it a lot fresh (within 3 months) and think it goes down hill very fast - at 6 months it is fading (just my opinion of course!)
I just had it for the first time at a festival and I've got to say I was super disappointed. I was expecting it to be a BCBS contender and it wasn't even in the same ballpark. Maybe it was a bad keg?
It's more in the ballpark with Central Watters BB stout or Dragon's Milk... Gets more hype because limited release with wax
they are very different beers. even though they are both barrel aged stouts, they really shouldnt be compared to each other. they are both great but very different from each other.
I had it over the summer from bottle, and was pretty disappointed as well. I wasn't trying to compare it to BCBS or anything, I just didn't care for it. I didn't really care for regular Pt5 either, so maybe this one just isn't for me. But, I have only tried each of them once (maybe I had the regular version twice), so I'll see how I like them next time around.
Do you generally like it better with age, or think it tastes discernably different as it ages? I'm pretty sure I've got another bottle of the 2014 somewhere, and I've debated when to crack it open.
Best way to find BB Plead the 5th is at Dark Horse. You won't find it at Kuhnhenn - we don't make that beer.
Been waiting for this, thank you. Also would love to try BB Plead the 5th, but what did you have at Kuhnhenn? Thoughts? From Ann Arbor, I haven't made it out that way quite yet, but certainly plan to.
BBPT5 is on a whole different plane from Dragon's Milk. Everytime I crack one I'm reminded why I love it so much. For me it's better than BCBS, but then again, I think BCBS is overrated as can be.
No worries, you guys are making some of the best beer I've had since moving to Michigan. Keep up the good work!
