After joining BA, how have your favorite beers fared?

    Hello all,

Well, honestly, I've run into a bit of a disappointment. Maybe it's just my palette changing, or taste inflation, but my favorite beers before I joined BA are no longer ones I enjoy nearly as much. I'm curious if I'm the only one.

Before I joined here, I had my favorite two beers (Mikkeller's Beer Geek Breakfast, and Boulevard's Imperial Stout X Coffee Ale), with two favorite seasonal beers (Mother's Winter Grind and Boulevard Irish Ale). Now as I'm sipping through a glass of Mother's Winter Grind, it doesn't taste or feel as good as it used to taste or feel. It tastes like burnt coffee, with a lackluster mouth feel - and I hate to admit that. Maybe it's because I had a Prairie BOMB! right before this, or maybe it's a bad batch, but nevertheless, it makes me wonder:

Has joining BA changed how you view beer? Do you still enjoy your old favorites? If not, have you found a way to appreciate your old favorites?

Mother's Winter Grind will always have a special place in my heart. I welcomed 2015 in with a sixer of it. Likewise, it was about all I bought last year during it's production period. I'm just disappointed in what I've had lately. Likewise, I'm afraid to have a bad taste of the Irish Ale that is sitting in my fridge now.

Thanks, and sorry if I'm ranting.

You've been a member for a month it'll keep changing even more than it already has trust me. I still enjoy my old favorites but not nearly as much as I used to. Boulevard wheat used to be an incredible beer. Now it's really nothing special to me.

Only being here for a little over a month and already shifting my seasonal favorites scares me a bit. I used to enjoy Boulevard Wheat a lot. It was my go-to outside of Winter Grind and Irish Ale season. Now, it's a beer I'll enjoy straight from the bottle while I'm doing work.

How do you find enjoyment in old favorites over the years? Or do you embrace the new taste inflation?

I still enjoy my old favorites, but yes my tastes change and I embrace it, I get more enjoyment out of the beers I'm drinking now than I ever have before. Enjoy the ride you'll keep discovering new favorites and the hunt for new beers is always fun.

Joining BA has enhanced my experience. I joined BA about the time I got into craft 6mo ago, after about 40 years of drinking macros. Previously, I had discovered some craft without knowing it was craft - beers such as Dixie Blackened Voodoo and Orkney Skullsplitter. I still like those beers but BA has given me a list of new beers to seek and try. I've realized that when I previously had liked "some dark beers", what I really prefer is more specifically stouts. I have a shelf full of stout singles recommended by 'yall, which I'll be trying on the NBS thread. I'm sure I'll be trying other styles as well.

My favorite beer at the time of joining....i can no longer choke down. Its to the point of no longer having a favorite and just having prefered styles.

I still definitely have favorites I just don't return to them as often as I did in the past.

You can't be that down on Winter Grinder because you rated it a 4.6.
I think as time goes on and you try more beers some of the beers you loved early on will fall from their lofty position. Not because they aren't good. Simply because as you try more examples of a style you will become more critical.

My favorite beer was Boston Lager.
My tastes have evolved over time, but I still find it a very easy drinking and tasty beer. Just not as flavorful as I once remember it being.

I guess I took the usual parabola of changing beer tastes. I started off drinking AAL, drank introductory craft like Wheat beers and the like, joined BA and started drinking DIPA's and seeking out rare bottle releases, finally started to enjoy stouts, began to seek out rare BBA stouts. Now I feel like I have come full circle as I drink primarily single IPA's, porters, and lagers.

Since I became a member of BA, I've become addicted to trying new beers. As a result, I don't drink the old standbys like Heineken, Moosehead, Sam Adams, and Guinness, nearly as much. I rarely drink any of them, not because I've become a "beer snob" as much as I don't even drink many craft beers regularly.

I still love Chimay Blue, Fuller's ESB, Corsendonk, and all the German Helles, Dunkels and marzens I used to love, and still love SN Pale and Boston Lager, but I no longer enjoy Samuel Smith's Nut Brown (was crazy for this beer once upon a time), or any Magic Hat that I used to enjoy back in the day

    Slow down.
You're noticing that a beer tastes different on a different occasion. Having the beer right after a heavy beer like Bomb probably has more to do with how you are experiencing this beer than being on this website for a month. Bomb is double the ABV. This isn't to say that you might like Winter Grind again tomorrow. Your favorite beers before joining were two 90+ rated coffee stouts... one with "beer geek" in the name, have your tastes really changed that much since then? It's not like you're saying you can't appreciate Newcastle anymore. I'm not putting value on those beers for being highly rated, I'm just wondering how this website could have influenced you much considering that you already liked the sort of product that's catering to this audience.

Most of the old ones have fallen off the map. Even my first favorite crafts have been pushed to the wayside. My palate has improved, my beer horizons expanded and I honestly owe it all to this website (and my wallet:wink:).

I still enjoy the same beers I did before coming hear just broadens my horizons and lets me learn about new beers I should be looking for and searching out to try that I may not have known about.

I've moved from ambers to stouts. Still enjoy ambers, I've just been introduced to a lot of great stouts through here.

Some of my favorite beers before I joined this website were Eliot Ness, Edmund Fitzgerald, Ayinger Brau Weisse, Schneider Aventinus Eisbock, Orkney Skull Splitter, and so forth.

Some of my favorite beers now are - those same beers.

This may have something to do with my being into craft beer for about ten years before I stumbled across this website.

I also second @zid 's sentiment almost entirely.

@THSdrummer ... have NO FEAR on your craft brew journey!!! Take note of what @zid, @SammyJaxxxx, @Scott17taylor, and others on this thread have stated.

Dive in head first into this journey!!! There really are many great brews to try!!! And, guess what, you, nor I, nor any of us BAs will be able to try them all. So, enjoy the ones that you enjoy. You're going to discover new favorites and, you are going to come across some duds. It's no different than knowing your favorite cuisine. Same goes for fine cigars. Same goes for wine, etc.

As for me, since joining the BA community, my craft brew horizons have expanded. I was already diving head first into craft brew before I joined the BA community. In my view, the BA community is a vast repository of information about craft brew. And from my experience thus far, most members of this community are willing to share their insights! Which, for me, is really COOL!!! My preferences have not changed, I now find myself seeking out the product of other breweries that I was not previously aware of. And, I want to become a student of craft brew. It's a journey of discovery!!!:sunglasses::grinning:

I believe @zid stated the singular key item: Slow down.

Have NO FEAR in delving into styles you've yet to try. Don't let any one brewers product, of a particular style, deter you from trying the same style from another brewer, because you will never know for certain what you may be missing! Also, don't let the opinion of any one individual sway your decision to try a particular style, for the same reason. You'll never know. Your preference is yours, not anyone else's! I'll go out on a limb here and say, all of us other BAs respect that!:sunglasses::grinning:

CHEERS to you BA brother!!! And, HAPPY CRAFT BREW JOURNEY!!!:sunglasses::grinning:

The two beers that got me in to craft beer have slipped down my list of favorites: Fat Tire and Boulevard Wheat. I wouldn't turn them down when offered them, but I don't seek them out.
