I'm trying to decide on a term to refer to my friends and others who only drink beers in the hop forward genre. They'll fight a baby to get their hands on the latest and greatest DIPA or Citra hopped pale ale yet
refuse to go near sours and don't drink dark beer and scoff at the idea of a farmhouse ale.

So that being said, can we call these people Hop Junkies? I'm definitely open to other suggestions.

I'm okay with being called that. I don't know if I'd fight a baby, but I'd surely stare one down to get what I'm looking for.

Okay -- I'll say it since no one else has (yet); I think we've already locked in the term "hop heads."

It's a toss up. Hop Head or Hop Junkie? Both conjure up drug references. Both apply to me. I've been calling myself a hop head, but I think I'll interchange the two, depending on who I'm talking to. Thanx for the heads up, OP.

Lupulin Lover! Seriously though I think hop head is the most prevailing term.

Yeah, back in the '80s (1880s) a hop head referred to an opium addict... not a great comparison I guess... or is it? :grinning:

I'm thinking beyond hop head, which was meant to denote people who were seeking out the 100+ IBU beers. I'm talking about people who won't go near any of the other great beers that are being made around the country.

No, it isn't - but I do appreciate the info. I was thinking pot head.

Whatever the term, it does encompass my behavior, most likely. While I enjoy an RIS or Hefe, I actually either mentally or emotionally crave hop forward anything. IPAs, DIPAs, American Barleywines, Cascadians - doesn't matter. Rarely goes a day that I drink where I do not get all hop head or tweak for hop something. Maybe Alpha Acid Deficiency or something....

Not really, hop head was coined to describe any beer drinker who only wanted to drink hop-forward beers; in flavor or bitterness. My home-brew club was calling these "enthusiasts" hop heads back in the early '90s (1990s, Otis!).

And pot head was used in the 1960s. No matter, I think I'm going with hop junkie from now on since I do seem to need my hop fix on at least a weekly basis.

Which, in the nineteenth century, was the common term for what we presently call "junkies."

Just so long as we don't find you somewhere out on the mainline.
Maybe so, but now you're talking a derivative -- at least "hop heads" is direct plagiarism. :grinning:

I guess if you want to look at it that way, Hop Fiend might be another good term to appropriate from the past. :grinning:

"fight a baby" that was funny. I'm a hop junkie for sure but love other styles as well
