Treehouse is ahead of the game right now with stouts(Good Morning) and IPAs (Julius, Green).

I recall a time when Citra hopped IPAs were blowing everyone's mind. Now you can pick up an excellent one easily.

So the question beckons... When will widely distributed breweries be able to match Treehouse?

Widely Distributed? Probably Never. But the way it trades right now for the IPA's is laughable. Eventually the IPA's will simmer to a Heady, Pliny, SOS level. The stouts the make are out of this world though.

Good question, since I haven't had either of the beers you listed I cannot comment on the tastiness of those beers, but I do think that the craft of delicately balanced beers becomes harder when they are made on a much larger scale.
BMC has done a very good job at replicating a terrible, imo, tasting beer consistently day after day.

Everyone has their own recipe, if it was so easy to replicate Heady other Brewers would be doing it. So to duplicate Treehouse, probably tough to do. There's always great beers being introduced, but to really nail the upper end of the dipa world is a tough task. There's lots of very good ipas , but very few beers like Heady, Abrasive, Julius, Trillium beers.

    Terroir isn't easily replicated.

Had Tesseract that was phenomenal. But Grimm is certainly not widely distributed.

Hoof Hearted is coming up and doing similar things.

Part of the great thing about Tree House is they are canned that day and brewery only. This ensures freshness and allows them to sell heavily dry-hopped beers meant to be consumed super fresh and control their distribution. This will be something I imagine many breweries will start replicating.

Frankly, I think Trillium does better hoppy beers & they're ramping up distro with the new brewery. I've loved every beer I've had from Tree House but the IPAs I've had are basically all the same to me with minor variations (admittedly, there are many I haven't had). I traded for a Juice Machine & was surprised to find that it pretty much tasted like Julius. Alter Ego, even by their own admission, is the same base beer as Julius with some variation in the dry hop process.

As much as I love Julius, I think Epiphany is the better Juice bomb beer.

Just had Grimm Lumen IPA last night. Thought it was better than the Tree House beers I've had, fwiw.

And I agree with this as well. Trillium has been the winner for me so far in head to head with Tree House.

    It's probably already been done.

Heady Topper was brewed for years before it was highly ranked on Beeradvocate.

I dont want to see any beers on the heady, pliny, sos, hillfarm, or treehouse level ever be widely distro'd personally. When they do get to that level people will be looking at them like they are a bud light.

Its basically impossible to say any of the top craft breweries are better than one another because they are all the same! All these stouts and IPA have such similar recipes and all it takes is one tweak to make something different. They all make the same stuff, just slightly different. Some are just more appealing to one person over another. Treehouse is not beter than Grimm or Alchemist or Trillium or Foundation or Bissell or HF, etc. All the same stuff!

Count me in the Trillium camp. I've had three offerings from TreeHouse. Good, not great. Virtually everything I've had from Trillium is great.

Grimm has some solid beers, but they're nowhere close to Treehouse level.

Yes, but in regards to beer the effects of terroir are also very exaggerated among beer geeks. Malts, hops, and yeast are rarely sourced locally [and when they are it's usually only 1 sometimes 2 of those]; and brewers have used techniques to treat their brewing water for well over a century. Spontaneously fermented "wild" beers aside, any beer can be replicated.

The hardest thing for another brewer to replicate is the word-of-mouth hype that markets the beer for them.

Nice shameless homer plug. You still did not answer OPs question though as Grimm is not widely distributed.
