I've been deep-diving NYC breweries and think there might be a category for the best nano-breweries. These might include breweries with an average beer rating above 3.75 and fewer than 20 beer releases:
Third Rail (4.10 BEER AVG/8 beers)
    LIC Beer Project (4.04/12)
    The Flagship (3.97/8)
    Radiant Pig (3.81/3)
    Braven (3.80/3)
    Alphabet City (3.77/2)
For obvious reasons, these breweries have fewer BA reviews than NYC's big craft brewers like Brooklyn Brewery, so the average beer ratings above may not be statistically significant. Also, I don't know if BA removes breweries if they are closed, or retains them for historical purposes.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks for the article. I added Bridge and Tunnel (3.91/16) to the list (like Finback till yesterday, still listed by BA as in Queens, not NYC). As for contract brewers, nomad brewers (like Harlem and Grimm), as long as some part of the process is in NYC, it is a brewing company.

Well I guess if they have an office in NYC they can say they are based there but I believe all packaging should say where the actual product is made and by whom. I'm more interested in the actual nanobrewer who started with a tiny setup in their garage and expanded than some of the contract or gypsy setups.

If it's just an office, maybe they aren't NYC. But Grimm creates its recipes in NYC, and Harlem supposedly grows some hops in a lot uptown. It's part of the brewing process.

Doesn't Grimm brew in DC sometimes too? It's just BA semantics. I'm generally against the contract/gypsy thing but I know most others here don't care. I just think the average consumer has a right to know where their "NYC" craft beer is really made. For example people are still surprised to learn that sixpoint is actually brewed halfway across the country as opposed to Brooklyn.

A bit inaccurate. Sixpoint still brews in Brooklyn; I've been inside the brewery there. They also brew in Memphis and are planning to expand beyond that.

Right but you know what I mean. They do some draft only in Red Hook but all cans are from TN. At least Brooklyn brewery has Utica, NY on their packaging.

Keg & Lantern I would consider a nanobrewerry since they brew all their beers in their basement of the bar.

When I think nano, I think 2-5 barrel brewhouse in a storage unit somewhere. LIC has a 20 barrel brewhouse in a massive space, so I don't think they really fit the definition. I also wouldn't consider the contract/gypsy guys to be nanos, because they don't own any brewhouse. The only NYC nanos I can think of off the top of my head are Strong Rope, Rockaway, and Transmitter.

I live in Harlem and shudder to think of the types of hops we'd produce

    nanos:
    Greenpoint Beer & Ale (Dirck)
    Keg and Lantern
    Big Alice
    Strong Rope
Bridge and Tunnel (although they're now expanding)
Transmitter (maybe too big to qualify as a nano nowadays).
Threes (maybe too big to be a nano too).
    possibly Rockaway

not nanos: grimm, LIC, third rail, braven, flagship, radiant pig, alphabet city

They closed down in 2014, but they just reopened up in the Bronx last week.

Regarding fewer than 20 releases - It might be a bit odd to define a "nano" by the amount of different beers they brew rather than by the amount of beer being brewed at one moment. Grupo Modelo has 17 beers listed here... Dirck/Greenpoint currently has 70.

I don't know the specs behind Eataly Birreria, but they probably fit and are often forgotten.

Birreria's BEER AVG is below 3.75.

@Homers_Beer_Odyssey you don't have to be highly rated to be a nanobrewery. the brewers association defines it based on the number of barrels you produce annually (it has to be an extremely small amount), plus the fact that you own your own equipment and produce your beer on it.

Of course you can define the parameters by which you want to include breweries in your personal list, but I'm surprised by your choices. As far as I know, Birreria is the only brewery in Manhattan (as in - a place where beer is brewed... @Kanger , correct me if I'm wrong). You can visit them and have a bite. They produce nothing but cask ale. In the category of NYC nano-breweries, that qualifies as a standout that surely trumps beer ratings... especially when you are including folks who brew their beer in another state (not that there's anything wrong with that). Since you care about ratings, the fact that Birreria's ratings here are 3.7 make this even stranger.
