I went out to eat last night and they were offering Utopia. It was $40 for 1.5 ounces. I passed, but I just want to know if anyone would take up that offer. I've never tried it so I was really considering it.

I've never had it either, and from what people say it's a really unique experience that I'd like to try one day, but to me there's not a beer or a bourbon or any liquid whatsoever that's worth $40 for a 1.5 ounce pour.

You could get a really nice bourbon for that price. I know wrong site.

I would not do it, but I've seen it at some places at $25 bucks for either a 2 or 3 ounce pour.

Seeing that you're from RI, see if you can wait until October. Sometimes they bring Utopias to the Beervana fest and you don't have to pay for it.

    That's a bad deal.

I paid $14 for a 2 oz sample a few years ago, maybe 2014? It was good, but not something I would spend that much money on. The bottle is cool though.

"Retail" price is 200 USD for 24 fl oz. so that makes... give or take $12.5 for a 1.5 oz pour.

I dunno, the cheap Asian in me doesn't like paying over 3x retail price for anything in general.

The WOB near me had it for $40, I was quick to pass it up

Its definitely worth trying, but $40 is pretty steep for 1.5 oz. I split a bottle with 3 other people and think that's probably the best way to do it. About $55 each for 6 oz. Still very expensive, but it will probably be one of those things you only do once and is worth doing IMO.

I normally see it for something like $25 for that size pour. It’s very good, but if you’re generally a price conscious person – don’t do it. We have a tendency to expect more from something the higher it costs. It’s delicious but even if you think it is, too, you’d probably say “well it’s not $40 delicious”. There are liqueurs for cheaper that could give you the same pleasure. The only “but” is that maybe you feel a high level of curiosity is worth spending $ on once, which is not uncommon.

My advice is to wait for a beer fest (such as one of the Beeradvocate ones) that Sam Adams is attending. At both the Extreme Beerfests and a local beer fest in Somerville they were pouring Utopia.

You can try unlimited samples and obvious get to try many many other beers for ~$45 - $55 depending on the cost of the ticket.

original post gave me heart burn. $40 for 1.5oz?!?!?! i dont know if I'd be able to stop laughing in the bartender's face.

i understand these brews are very expensive, but maybe dont put them on tap? or maybe dont try and make 300% profit...

It's worth trying, but not worth $40. I tried some at a WGBH fund raiser a few years ago. If I'd never had it before, I'd be willing to pay ~$15 for that amount, but not much more. For $40 you'd be better served going to a liquor store and buying yourself a bottle of Mystic Entropy.

Definitely worth trying but not at that price... $25 for 1-2oz pour would seem more reasonable considering the price and size of the bottle which is around $200 and 25oz respectively I believe.

Carriage Inn and Saloon, actually. Pretty cool place. Good beer selection.

That's a good idea! Hopefully, I can convince some of my friends to go in with me.

It's a great beer, but I'd suggest trading for a bottle that way you can have 1.5oz whenever the F you want. Like 7:28 in the morning.

I would say for that price buy a bottle of Balladin Xayayu, it's a similar experience and if you dig that then spend the $$ on a taste of Utopias, that being said, when I have had Utopias it was between $15-20 for a 2 oz pour.
