If Tree House were to go the distributor route they would have to price the beer lower to the distributor since most customers would not be willing to pay both the markup the distributor would make plus the retailer's markup.

At this point in time in makes sense for Tree House to direct sell their beers since they are making enormous per unit profits plus their customers are willing to travel and stand in line to make these direct purchases. It will be interesting to see if this market condition is still the case 1-2 years from now. Beer geek drinkers generally speaking are fickle customers who are constantly looking for the 'next BIG thing'.

    Cheers!

All good points. Given their current model and the gobs of money they are seemingly making with it, would it might make sense for Treehouse to open up another brewery in different region within the US rather than taking a distro route? The ravenous crhazies are more than willing to drive hours to line up for fresh product so a strategically placed 2nd brewery with the same model might work. Having said that, I think a good percentage of sales at the current brewery are for people re-distributing the beer across the country via trades, etc so a 2nd brewery might cut into that. But yeah, there is also the fickleness factor you mention which would make this option a moot point. Just some rambling thoughts. Cheers.

This is a great idea. But im not sure how open Nate would be to giving control to other brewers in other locations.

If I were the owner of Tree House this would make me too nervous to open a second location. Unless they could obtain outside investment which would 'finance' the building of a second location but provide Tree House with majority ownership this would be a 'no go' for me. But maybe the folks at Tree House are risk takers and would be willing to leverage their HUGE profits for a second location?

    Hmm?

    Cheers!

Even if it's only 4 cans, still would be a really expensive 4 pack. It would make sculpin look cheap.

    This is basic math dude.

    $4 per can / 16oz = $.25 per ounce

    $.25 ounce * 12oz = $3 per 12oz can/bottle

    $3 * 6 = $18 six pack

Gotta say, sounds like you're three-quarters of the way there to the most awesome version of "12 days of Christmas."

It's all about freshness with these breweries. Well, for the most part anyway. It's also the price of these hops, and Trillium, Treehouse, HF, etc. use a LOT of hops. Most breweries don't want to spend money on a shit load of hops for a beer that might just sit on shelves for a while, so they craft their beers to last longer. Stone is the only major craft brewery to attempt to get something super fresh out, with pretty good results. But it takes a lot of money and willingness to do something like that. It's incredibly hard to make sure all your distributors get the product out fast enough and then to have those distributors keep tabs on all the stores they supply to make sure the beer isn't sitting on shelves.

i agree here.... when Alpine became so readily available it flew off the shelves the first week but just sits now..... but then it could also be that GreenFlash is brewing it now and it just hasnt seemed to be the same since.....

where is alpine just sitting on the shelves? i'm not a huge fan of the GF incarnations (Nelson the exception) but haven't seen it sit on the New England shelves yet. Is it an official shelf turd in CA??

In the audiophile world (another geekdom I inhabit), many people rave about the benefits of cryogenic treatment. Maybe that's the next wave in craft beer to preserve freshness.

Their site says that Julius is 3.1lb of hops per BBL, which is actually pretty in line with most of the happier IPAs out there. 8/BBL is absolutely ridiculous and I can't imagine you yield much more than 2/3 of your beer at best after that dry hop.

I don't know how long it sits there or how often the stock rotates but I can pretty much always find it at a few bottle shops around me near Boston.

To be fair Dave, most everyone was drinking out of Shaker pint glasses back then too. The glasses available to most folks have definitely improved.

thanks but i did the basic math already bro. see my earlier post.
    3.75*6= 22.50
    4.25*6= 25.50
since they are 16 ounce cans they usually come in 4 packs
    3.75*4= 15
    4.25*4= 17

My point was the beer is already at sculpin prices, but are actually worth buying in my opinion. Imagine adding (meaning including) a distrobutor in that equation, thats all i was trying to say. Thank you for trying to help!
