When did "trading" turn into this? People asking for expensive, rare, and single-time released or annual release BA stouts in return for a few canned IPAs that come out monthly or even bi-WEEKLY. And the obsurd offers arent even grounded in rarity, but simply based on taking advantage of hype! (Earned hype... but...) Super frustrating! Wish more people had the mentality of hooking eachother up from coast to coast without being straight up greedy. Anyone else feeling this frustration? When I ship extras, occasionally when I can get one, I'll toss in a Pliny etc as an EXTRA... because it only cost me 6 or 7 bucks and will stoke someone out that they get to try it fresh withouth donating a kidney or dealing with the crazy hussle! Same goes for people that throw a Heady or SOS in my shipments. Freaking awesome! Share the hop wealth people! Beer is for sharing!

I am assuming that the questions in this post are rhetorical since you already know the answer: "...simply based on taking advantage of hype!"

    Cheers!

What do you guys think... is my frustration reasonable? Ive been trying to do my research on Treehouse lately. I know releases are day-of and the location seems kinda out of the way and I know that bottle limits apply... but still seems like a moderately accessible brewery. I've seen people asking for FO or Parabajava in return for ONE OR TWO CANS of King Julius. I think that's nuts.

It's not that crazy for any of it. If there person with the beer trades for it and both parties are happy, that's what they're trying to maintain. Not some sort of weighted system of what goes for what but for the most part, it is naturally weighted and most traders expect more for bigger stouts. Yet, once a day, a steal pops up for someone thats chasing something. It all works out in the end. Don't get too frustrated brother, its just beer.

I am not a trader so feel free to simply ignore my post. If the folks who are trading Treehouse beers are asking for a ridiculous beers in trade isn't the 'answer' pretty simple? Just don't trade with them.

As you have already noted the Treehouse traders are playing the 'hype card'. The sad fact is that some folks will be willing to make trades with them since they strongly want to drink that 'hype'.

I doubt that a BA thread is going to change any of the Treehouse traders minds since they obviously want to exploit the 'hype'.

The reality is that there are so many excellent beers to drink that simply exist on store shelves that there really is no need to get in a tizzy over things like this. If you ever find a Treehouse trader that is willing to trade at an acceptable rate of exchange then go for it. But otherwise don't let this get you so upset.

    Cheers!

The snake pit is absurd lately. And standing in line at TH, hearing jamokes openly talk about trying to trade their allotment for a DB Huna or VR... Yea it's fucking frustrating. The hype train has left the station, and while a good 80% of their customers are in it for themselves and just want to enjoy the awesome beers they're putting out, there are still plenty who just want to cash in on that hype.

To be honest, you're better off joining the BIF community here, and worrying less about shmucks who are only out to "win" trades.

It bothers the hell out of me. Especially when I'm from the area and have been going to Tree House since it was being brewed and sold out of a shed. I remember when the lines were full of beer enthusiasts. I've watched it transform into a shit show and it was initially centered around the big releases, Good Morning, King Julius, etc. The fact that people are looking for whalezbro in exchange for 2 cans of Julius is ridiculous. The first canning run of King Julius was a big deal because it had only been brewed in very limited quantities and were limited to 1 750 pp. With that being said, there are a ton of people that are taking advantage of the hype because people are willing to trade these beers for Tree House. It'll die down once the next best thing opens.

And BTW, about 6 months ago I extra'd a can of Julius because I really wanted someone to try it.

I share the same feeling. I'm amazed at what's being offered by some. Back when Zombie Dust was hard to get and really popular, I remember thinking that some people might offer quite a bit for bottles. But, I was happy to trade it for Heady, Pliny, etc. in my mind, that's what made sense then and probably something like that does now. Granted, they aren't producing in huge quantities but I agree that the sharing beer mentality has kind of gone by the wayside when it comes to TH cans.

And Zombie Dust is usually a regular extra that I put in trades for that same reason, although it doesn't seem to have the cache it used to.

I'm not super upset... just kinda lame that people sit on hops. IMO so much better fresh! With the Treehouse game, you really have to have "a guy" to get the fresh stuff it seems. Only frustrating because I know how freaking delicious that stuff is! Haha just wanted to get some conversation going. I know a lot of people are in my boat right now... considering selling their house and family to get unfiltered deliciousness. Decisions decisions....

Takes two to tango. If a guy want to flip a BA Stout for semi shelf IPAs so what? If he can't get it and he'd like to try it he offers up what he has, and whatever he's will into part with. Pretty simple. It's not easy pulling those great NE IPAs , so offering up hops for me wouldn't work, but offer up sours or BA brews they can't get is another thing.

I think the frustration of the OP and those commenting so far is misplaced. Be frustrated at those willing to give up so much for (insert flavor of the month brewery). They set the market, not the other way around. I understand the frustration, but I also don't think it is reasonable to expect a person who can get a DB Huna (for example) to say to themselves "You know what, the beer I have doesn't deserve to trade for that DB Huna, so even though I could get it, I'll just ask for a regular Huna instead."

I totally agree! Tree house makes awesome brews but I laugh at what people want for it. I get my share of it from a great local guy but if you don't have one (Most don't) it's ridiculous and crazy! Never give up killer stouts for ipas unless you gotta and I mean gotta have! Agree with the pass the wealth but they hold the golden ticket so??

I live in Baltimore and drive up to Tree House a few times each year because my wife and I love their beer and we like the atmosphere that is apparent among the staff there. Happy to put up with the lines, listen to the BS, etc...we get what goes along with a trip to a brewery like Tree House. I also like Monson because it reminds me a bit of where I grew up. I've never traded a beer in my life, but will usually bring some cans back to send to my brother in Colorado or give to a good friend of mine in DC. I'd be happy to send a can or two your way OP next time I go up if anything I bring back is interesting to you.

Don't give up your cellar for stuff like king julius or very green etc. regular green, julius or any of their other offerings are just as good. The hype train has gotten crazy with "tradehouse". Being in the trade game for awhile, and a regular treehouse customer for awhile I can see both sides of this. Alot of people drive long distances for treehouse, wait in long lines for low limits, so it is not easy to let go of those coveted cans. If i was dealing with a new trade partner, I would never make a deal to swap treehouse cans for other regular traded IPAs like zombie, pliny etc. Its just not worth it because treehouse IPAs are so damn good. On the other hand, treehouse is pumping out ~180 bbls of beer a week, and julius is available almost every week, most weeks you can score at least score 8-16 cans if you take the trip, so yeah, its not super rare and shouldn't trade so high. When i see proposed trades for a small number of cans in exchange for VR of fou (insert whale) all I can do i can do is shake my head, i agree it is a little ridiculous, but trades like that are getting done so can you really blame treehouse traders? I try not to value treehouse beers so high, i throw them in as extras, I send regular trade partners half of my allotment without expecting much in return. There is alot of newer traders with easy access since treehouse has exploded, and its hard to blame them for valuing the beer so high because simply that's how the beer been trading. For non-locals, it also might be important to consider how crazy it has been there, there has been numerous days that 1500+ people show up in a single day to buy cans over the course of a couple hours.

While I know it's frustrating how difficult it is to trade for Tree House stuff, I can't really blame people for taking the opportunity to trade for well, anything, they want. Sometimes what they want may be something you have or can reasonably obtain. It may not happen often, but it is what it is. People who have the more in-demand product get better trade offers. Not to mention all the effort people go to to get Tree House beers. I've had a few Tree House beers thanks to people driving to go to releases as I'm not too far, but with the amount of demand there is, people are coming from far away and waiting on long lines. I'd guess most people there aren't exactly locals. I can see why people would only want to do high-end trades considering they're going to such lengths to get the beers.

I'm sure the hype will die down, but the best way to get Tree House at this point in time is to go there yourself, if you can. Fly into NYC, check out NYC's best breweries, rent a car and check out all the amazing New England breweries. It'd definitely be a worthwhile beercation.
