Within the last week I have had two relatively local craft beers for the first time. Both are rated well here (names aren't important, that's not the point). I found both to be solid but frankly quite ordinary (for their style) and probably won't buy them again. It makes me wonder if I am missing something. Anyone else run into that where a new beer (at least to them) is good, but nowhere near as great as the general consensus is?

I feel most of IPAs or Imperial Stouts are pretty much same. Mostly I try them, even they are nice, it just comes to me like "Decent, but meh.". I think it's because there are more greater substitutes.

But there are some beers that's ordinary and nothing special but so damn good. The Kernel IPAs were like that to me. Nothing that much special, but it was so tasty and they made me to buy other and other varieties.

If they're your neighbors in any relative sense, you should support them. If they aren't bringing great beer now, they will only bring better beer with experience and helpfully critical review of their beer.

Give them your best and if they're dedicated enough they'll give you theirs.

Thats how I felt when I got Gose Gone Wild this week. There was so much damn hype surrounding it that I wish I could have my 12 dollars back and buy a six pack of Westbrook Gose.

I like ordinary craft beers. As long as the quality and flavors are good, who cares if it stands out in some way. In fact, I prefer beer to not have any standout feature usually.

Of course! There is a great deal of subjectivity and variance among people. I am actually more confused as to why so many people expect there to not be variance. There are beers I hate that people love and beers I love that people hate, and I think that is true for virtually everyone.

In Skateboarding metaphors. Not everything needs to be a super complicated switch stance triple flip 720 over a whatever etc type trick. Sometimes it's the perfectly executed (and extended) backside boneless that shows off the skills the most.

A good way to approach it is forget about what the "consensus" is, and just follow your own taste.

As craft beer is commonly more expensive here, I choose old good european classics, when wish something ordinary to drink.

Sure. Quite often. Reviewing from a single sample of 12 or more oz doesn't give me or anyone else a 100% true picture of the beer. How we taste things is influenced by several other things than the beer (e.g., what food we've had that day, etc.). I've had different reactions to two bottles from the same six pack consumed on two separate evenings. So when I'm able I often don't review until the 3rd full bottle from the 4 or 6 pack.

Also as my experience as grown some of the beers that wowed me back when now seem much more ordinary than I thought they did at that time. This is why I both look a the numbers and read the reviews done by a few of the reviewers whose tastes are similar to mine.

Perfectly ordinary is mediocre at best. Maybe.

Depends on the level of quality one is accustomed to. There are people in the world for whom Oval or Westvleteren beers are perfectly ordinary. :-)

I happen to like a perfectly ordinary beer. A beer doesn't always have to be pushing boundaries to be good. And I often find that the subtle nuances of a great "ordinary beer" are what make that beer worthwhile.

Ordinary as in not unique does not mean a bad thing. if you like beers with "crazy" ingredients like coffee, cactus, lactose, etc... then id say just do your thing. I personally really like a Pils or Vienna which are ordinary but quality brewing makes those "ordinary" brews still tasty although may not be unique. To me, you dont always have to stand out if you have excellent quality.

I couldn't agree more. Give you a perfect example. I will use names because its all good and they deserve the praise. Magnify Brewing opened about 9 months ago - they are a short drive for me so I was both curious and hopeful. I waited a month or so to let them get their feet wet and stopped by. While nothing I tried blew me away they were decent, tasty brews that certainly didn't disappoint in any way. I've been going back ever since and with every batch they get better. Of their year round beers I prefer Vine Shine IPA and Search Saison and the latest batch of each is amazing. These guys ( the 2 Eric's LOL ) learn from each batch and make slight adjustments and improvements. Cheers

Given your from Fl , I'd guess one of those local solid, but unimpressive beers was Jai Alai.
