New York Times, Feb. 1, 2016 page B5. The headline is "Beer Ads That Portray Women as Consumers, not Eye Candy". This is one of the bigger "tells" that the big brewers have come to the realization that their loss of market share is due to factors in addition to the growth of craft beer. So instead of trying to recruit new young drinkers, they will turn at least some of their attention toward women, who, the article states, consume 25% of macro lagers and 30% of craft beer. I don't know after treating women as objects for so many years, are women going to forgive and forget and belly up to macro lagers?

Are those percentages true? That is wonderful to read that women drink more good beer than bad. Part of my complaint about breweries, bottle releases, festivals is that it is always a sausage fest. More women serving than in the crowd. Having said that, I still like Budweiser commercials. Everyone is always having so much fun. Cheers.

Well, they already consume 25% of the macro lagers... not sure they would self-identify with the term "belly up", though!

    That's not how I read it. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/01/b...men-as-empowered-consumers-not-eye-candy.html

"women consumed... 25 percent of the volume of the ( entire beer) category" (not just "macro")
    .25 X 197 million bbl = 49.25m bbl of beer

"Brewers Association estimate that women consumed 30 percent of the craft beer on the market in 2014"
    .30 X 21.8m bbl of craft = 6.5m bbl. of craft

So, women were estimated to have consumed 42.75 million barrels of non-craft beer.

New Bud Light Super Bowl ad: A group of slobbish-looking women pop Bud Lights and scantily clad male models magically appear giving them sexy looks and innuendo.

I've also noticed that quasi craft is now having commercials. I saw a shock top one yesterday.

I notice a lot more women in the craft beer aisle of my store, not just buying for husbands/boyfriends etc...not a lot of IPA fans I've noticed (just a generalization, not a cold hard fact)

I don't think women are holding a grudge against macro beer for being used as sex objects in their ads, after all they are used as sex objects in ads for so many products. Who's keeping a ledger? But they may not connect with a product when being portrayed in that manner. Some women even enjoy the image.

Every time I go to Tree House I see quite a few women there. Groups of them even, with no men in their party. The first 30-40 (die-hards waiting 1 1/2 to 2 hours) are usually all men though.

There's even going to be the "first craft beer super bowl ad" this year for the Super Bowl.

I think women are more receptive to craft beer than thy are to macro lagers, so these ads may be missing their market. I don't know any facts for whether dark malty beers are more favored than hoppy beers, but my guess is that is probably the case based on the four women that I know in my life and the way they progressed into craft beer. I think the macro's with their hop-forward taste are a turn off for many new beer drinkers, men and women.

In my experience, most of the women I know are hop-heads first and foremost. That said, I acknowledge that my experience is also a generalization.

My wife will drink some great beers, two or three. I love great beer, but she will be happy with just a few.
