Do you revisit duds or beers you didn't enjoy the first time around?

I was at a friend's house recently for a birthday party, and the host has bought a Firestone Walker mix pack. I wanted something sessionable, so I tried a Pivo Pils, and man, that really hit the spot, and I thought it was delicious! It is clean, sessionable, balanced although hoppy for a pils, and perfect for a longer drinking session.

I remember the first time trying it when it first came to Colorado, I found the beer to be sort of "blah" and I really didn't think much of it. I found it to be unbalanced towards bitterness/ hops, and didn't really enjoy the flavor overall. I haven't bought the beer since, nor sought it out.

The fact that I really enjoyed it this time around reminded me that there are tons of factors involved with enjoying craft beer, and that I feel like brewers deserve second chances, especially the ones you know can really brew, like Firestone. Its one thing if a brewery's entire lineup are diacetyl bombs or really poor quality. Its another thing if you're palate is different from day to day, and I also feel that mood and an experience can really affect our impressions about beer as well.

Do you guys typically go this route or is there enough out there that you can move on and find something you enjoy more? Price is also a factor of course. If I try a $20 bomber once and find it to be "gross" I most likely won't spend the cash on it again.

With so much great beer out there I rarely give a 'dud' a 2nd chance.

If I try and beer and don't like it, there is very little chance I'll spend money on that same beer but similar to your situation, if I'm somewhere and the beer is available for me to drink at no cost, I may give it another shot depending on what other options are available.

For me, it's best practice to give a beer at least a second chance - especially taking into account all the factors that go into tasting. For example, I picked up a sixer of NB's Side Trip this weekend, tasted it out Friday after work, and wasn't digging it - just a weird mishmash that didn't seem to cohesive or dialed-in. But then I tried it again Saturday night with food - Indian cuisine - and found it really pleasing. The yeasty profile and mild hop presence really shined pairing it with food. Then, just for kicks, I tried a third bottle last night on its own without food and found it to be a nice, easy drinking (basically sessionable) beer. I was able to appreciate it much more knowing what it could do when paired with food, and I think that made me dig deeper into the beer and realize its merits.

So, yeah, I'm glad I gave Side Trip another shot. Will I pick up another sixer? Hard to say, but at least I know a great food beer to recommend to friends, bring to a party, etc, and I think experiences like this sharpen the palate and make me a more seasoned craft beer drinker.

A lot of the time I will give a beer a second shot, because I probably have more than one available.

It all depends on how big of a dud it is though.

I recently had the chance to revisit Victory Helles Lager. My only other previous experience with this beer was over nine years ago, when I gave it a 2.37 rating. This time around I really enjoyed it, enough so to re-review it and give it a 4.28 rating. It's possible that I got a bad batch the first time or that Victory has tweaked their recipe since then. But it's more likely that my palate changed over time and I'm more familiar now with the characteristics that make a Helles lager what it is. I'm glad I gave that "dud" a second chance!

    Need to add

    3. Sometimes

I will try any beer again but I wont buy many again. If offered to me I will give it another go. Some are not going into my mouth again, Sweet Baby Jesus. Depending on price and other factors I might buy a single to try again.

    Enjoy

With so many beers to try I don't try a beer again that I didn't care for the first time unless I bought more than one to start.

For me, it's dependent on what characteristics I perceive that make the beer a dud. If it's possible that the beer was off due to infection, dirty tap line, or something similar, I may well give it another chance. If it trips my hop sensitivity enough to invoke the Wall O' Perfume response I'm "blessed" with, I will not give it another chance - I've yet to hear of an accidentally over-hopped beer making it to shelves/kegs. If it's neither of those things, but I just don't like it, then I'd likely not pay money to try it again, but wouldn't turn it down if offered a taste of it.

Every beer deserves a second chance...on tap is where that chance is given. When there is no bottle dates, I leave those for a home for dust to collect.

If i find that i was perhaps a little drunk while drinking it ill revisit it. The only way i wont revisit a beer is if it repulses me which only happened a few times. More often than not though when i revisit a beer, it usually isnt as good as i remember sadly.

Depends on the beer...I gave Orval a 2nd chance because I just couldn't believe that a beer that so many folks were raving about could be so bad. I'm glad I tried it again because the 2nd one was unbelievably good. But with no-name stuff I pull off the shelf that just looks interesting, I don't often give them a 2nd chance.

They may deserve a 2nd chance, but there's enough beers out there that are deserving of a 1st chance that I'll rarely make it around to the 2nds.

My palate has changed over the years... There's lots of beers that I didn't like the first time I tried them.
