So I made a new counter flow chiller out of soft copper tubing and the such. Basically the same thing people are making on your tube. Anyway, put it into action the first time yesterday. Ran some hot water (170 degrees) than some starsan. Thinking now I may not have let all the star San out. Worked amazingly. But I noticed the wort seem to have a grayish film on top. Wondering if it was the star San forming a layer on top or something else. I oxygenated and pitched. I didn't really pay any mind to it considering brew days typically include 6 or so beers therefore I was a bit drunk. But now that I am sober I am wondering it this film layer is something hazardous. Anyone have any experience with anything like this? Any thing I should do to prevent killing myself?

Was the copper new? Did you run it thoroughly with warm soapy water through it? Copper tubing has a film on the outside of machine oil at best and possibly other oils, films, greases (depending on where it was stored) at worse. I guess it's possible that some of that could be on the inside of the tubing as well. I'm not suggesting this is the film but I would not say that new tubing is safe to come in contact with food before it is soaped up and rinsed well. If the tubing was clean, then no clue.

Skim some of the film and smell it. If it smells petroleum or metallic, I personally would dump and clean everything thoroughly.

Btw I don't normally have my first beer until after cleanup. It makes cleanup bearable knowing there is a payoff coming. And when dealing with multiple gallons of boiling liquid and compressed explosive gases, I try to approach them as sober as possible.

It was new copper. I did rinse it with hot water and sanitizer but no soap
