    Hi everyone,

I have been stocking my cellar recently, up to 91 beers, but most of them are new (2014/2014). How much do you trust buying beer from stores that is older than a year? I basically figure it falls into two categories, either the store purposely held onto it or tried to get older beers (I trust this more) or they simply didnt sell it so it sat for a long time. I tend to come across the latter in store that really dont sell much craft beer or have that type of customer base, so it sits. What say you?

    Tom

Finding bottles sitting on shelves getting dusty has been a great way for me to find older stock for my cellar. There is some risk since you don't know how it's been stored and the temp. exposure but as long as the price is reasonable it's worth the risk to me.
Also I have also encountered good beer aged in the stores that has been discounted so they can get it out of the store. A couple of weeks ago I found two 4 packs of 2012 Chimay Blue for $6.99 a piece.

Risk vs reward if worth it for me... I'll get burned sooner or later, eh...

Look for styles that age well - Stouts, sours, barleywines, smoked beers, anything with Brett - that are 8% ABV or around that. Room temp doesn't necessarily make a beer go bad, the beer will just age at a quicker rate than if it were at ideal cellar temp. (50-55F).
