I was just wondering what some of you BA's favorite beer cocktails or beer substitutes in traditional cocktails are. I usually stick to straight beer and rarely touch hard liquor due to a general lack of interest but more recently I've been experimenting with subbing beer for ingredients in bourbon cocktails. Would love to hear some favorites and ideas and recipes!

A bar here does something called an "iceberg", which is usually something like a pint of Tecate topped with frozen Margarita. It's perfect on a hot summer day.

ya know it's funny I've tried a lot of beers but I've never bought tecate, I've tried most of the other mexican lagers.

I used to pour Skol in my Old Milwaukees. I enjoyed them.

There's a bar here that specializes in craft beer and beer cocktails. They make most of their cocktails with sour/lambic-style beers. Mixology is all about balancing flavours, the main ones being sweet, sour, aromatic and to a lesser extent bitter. Sour beers are perfect for this sort of thing; notice how lemon and lime are hands down the most widely used juices in cocktails. To start, try adding some Gueuze or substituting citrus with it in any classic cocktail that prominently features citrus like the Daiquiri, Margarita, any Sour (e.g. whiskey sour, amaretto sour), etc. Or add some to a gin tonic. Balance things out with some simple syrup if it gets too intense. With fruit lambics, you can let your imagination run wild. Imagine a Margarita with Framboise Lambic in it!

I know the cost of these beers might make it a little less attractive, but remember that you can settle for lesser quality for the sake of experimenting (and if you fall in love with a creation, you might lash out on a good bottle to make a truly brilliant cocktail), and also that one bottle of beer will make a lot of cocktails.

On a more or less related topic, I once tried a hop-infused gin that was just fantastic, it worked perfectly. Try infusing a bottle of gin with hops yourself, that could be a lot of fun. Or maybe try using IPAs instead of Gueuze, especially very citrusy ones. Apply the same principle by modifying classic recipes as a good starting point.

Let me know if any of this works out.

Doesn't happen often but since I hate bloody marys usually when drinking really early in the morning I'd go with an Alabama Lunch Box (that's the name they told me). 12oz lager, 1 or 2 oz OJ, 1.5oz Amaretto. Unless a heavy stout is an option.

Really wanted a creamy, vanilla stout, but had nothing close. Made some mixed drinks instead. Rye whiskey and stout was really good. Horchata vodka, stout and ice cube was better than the individual parts, too. Bourbon, stout and vanilla was overpowered by the Breckenridge bourbon. Thought that might happen, but was surprised not much changed when I doubled the stout and vanilla proportions. Thought about using Basil Hayden's or even George Dickel Barrel Select, regret choosing Breckenridge. Feel like I wasted some great ingredients (especially that Breckenridge...).

Didn't measure, but approximate pours were:

    Rye & Stout

    ~.25 fl oz Rye
    ~4 fl oz Stout

    Horchata & Stout

    ~.75 fl oz Horchata
    ~4 fl oz Stout

Favorite is an Irish car bomb, along those lines I like a variety of black and tans. The tans I sometimes sub out for ciders, sometimes called black velvet, (guinness and strongbow is a great place to start)

Flaming Dr Pepper, probably... shot of amaretto dropped in a stein of (tasteless) beer like Coors Light. You can set it on fire or not... drink it fast enough and I guess it tastes like it has 23 flavors.

Yeah place near me does the same thing but with Dos Equis (reg or amber) called a Ricky - 50/50 split. Damn good in summer.

Pretty much that and Micheladas (also made with a cheapo mexican lager) are the only beer "cocktails" I'll do. Would never mix good beer with anything

Not really into the beer cocktails, but I do enjoy a Michelada once in awhile. Cheers.

Beermosa's at Karben4 during their Sunday brunches are pretty epic. Its Tokyo sauna (wet hopped IPA) and grapefruit juice.
