The term "keg" was also commonly used for the wooden versions that predated the metal containers in the US, where the term "cask" tended to be used primarily for wooden vessels, both horizontal and vertical, typically much larger than a single 31 gallon barrel or other smaller sized kegs meant for transport. Casks were brewery-based vessels that were used in the brewery for fermentation and for aging/largering tanks, as illustrated by snip from an 1890s ad where two casks surround a beer keg:
Technically, within the industry in the US "keg", like "barrel", was also a unit of measure, ¼ bbl. in volume (which makes sense, since a "keg" in general terms is a "small barrel" [think "keg of nails"]). Larger US containers were hogsheads (2 bbl. or 63 gallons* - and probably pretty rare), barrels and half-barrels, smaller were sixths (or "sixtel") and eighths ("ponies" and, rarely, "eightel").
    * When the standard US beer barrels was still 31½ gallons.
For example post-Repeal US industry usage:

---1947 The Practical Brewer, Master Brewers Assoc. of America.
Straight steel kegs were being experimented with in the US in the pre-Prohibition era (supposedly developing a suitable blend of pitch that adhered well to the interior steel was a problem). After Repeal some brewers were using pitched steel and pitched aluminum kegs - which, while they were lighter, easier to sanitize and more durable (although the early aluminum units was easily dented, cracked or otherwise damaged), they still needed to be pitched, and lacked the insulating property of wood (thus, probably requiring refrigeration on trucks for local deliveries). Additionally, some aluminum kegs with a stainless steel inner liner were made, as were laminated wood kegs, in the post-Repeal eraaaaahhh---------------Ah, damn.

Are fact-based comments, correcting or elaborating on others' posts "snobbish" :grimacing:? I've run into that opinion before around here. I don't know - for me, facts are "Fun ", too :grinning:, "combating" misinformation.

No word on the use of granite, though?

First place I'd check would be the history of New Hampshire's greatest and finest, Frank Jones Brewing Co. of Portsmouth, N.H. ("buy local" didn't just start, after all).

Other than that, there are rumors of Samuel Smith's short-lived and disastrous "Yorkshire Square Casks" made of slate. Even with UK's National Health Service, the medical costs for their delivery people became prohibitive - besides the weight, those square corners were a b*tch!.:grimacing:

Adam from the Stone is the best fit for the new Woody. It might be smokey depending on one's taste, it's inspired by German beer, and the brewer uses a polished concrete egg for it. OK, not a perfect match, but close enough. Take a look:

I will only drink beer that has been filtered using the undergarments of hot super models and then stored in the above mentioned kegs.

I've never took it as snobbish at all. The obscure stuff you know about in depth is ridiculously impressive. If you know about topics other than beer to this extent, you need to go on Jeopardy and win some money. Cheers to you sir.

I agree. Heck, many of my posts are shoot-from-the-hip, tongue-in-cheek anyway. I don't mind being fact-checked, corrected or otherwise reviled.

Yes, but I lose Biersnobpoints® by neither knowing German nor even pretending I do by Google-translating the notes in the illustration of the Pabst facility above (added after your reply).

That is German, isn't it? Or do I need even stronger reading glasses (< which add Biersnobpoints®, of course). Wait! I found my +4.00's - I can make out "Lager"!

Oh that's real nice and everything but its got nothing on mine! No if if I could only find it, I'm fairly certain that it would shatter ANY lens that attempted to photograph it...

LOL! But seriously, that is pretty awesome.

I must be the most boring beer drinker alive. I don't want anything complicated, unique or noteworthy when it comes to beer. I just want to grab a beer from my fridge or cellar and drink it in a Duvel tulip or mug or sometimes right from the can, while sitting in my Lazyboy, watching TV
