I'm not sure how common this is around the country, but my local grocery store has a shelf of singles that you can take 6 of and pay $10. Normally it's just common stuff but occasionally you get lucky. Wondering what the best deals you've gotten on beers that the store doesn't really have any idea about? A few weeks ago, I pulled out 2 Higher Maths, 2 90min IPAs and 2 Hercules DIPAs.

Got 5 Expedition Stouts and 1 Java Stout for $7.99.

I filled up a second six pack the same day with the rest of the Expedition Stouts, Java Stouts, and some other Bell offerings. By far one of my best hauls for cheap

The time before, I got 2 Expedition Stouts, two limited Schlafly's, a Third Coast Ale, and a regular Schafly IPA offering for $7.99.

    I love that grocery store!

I've been lucky in the past with some neat finds - FBS being the most recent example. However, I'm always mindful to check the dates as a lot of times my local grocery uses it as a dumping ground for old IPAs.

I've never gotten that lucky on mix sixes. I've gotten a few beers that are normally 12-14 a six in a 10 mix six.

A lot of stores do it, but I can think of one in CT that price gouges to the max. They charge $19.99 and mask it in the fact that they're giving you G-Bot and maybe, just maybe, another reputable beer. I'd rather grab the pack of G-Bot exclusively and pay less for my trouble.

The grocery store (Kroger) around here does it, but it's typically not anything that sought after. Most liquor stores will let you make your own, though, and charge you whatever the price of the single is.

My store charges by the beer. They divide the price of the pack by 6 or 4 and boom theres the singles price. So i usually dont make a full six i just grab a few. I honestly rarely buy full sixers anymore. Just singles and variety packs.

I've never seen anything special in one near me, and it's like 12.99 or 13.99 to do it.

Same here, you can buy as many or few bottles as you want from the entire selection then they divide by 4 or 6 to get the single bottle price. If there's a new 6 pack that I'm not sure about I'll just grab a single out of it to try but I don't ever mix a whole 6 pack.

A few places do it here , and they lose all control. I'd suppose a lot of those beers are old and not worth taking free let alone paying for, doubly so anything resembling a hoppy brew. The idea is a good one , but incredibly difficult to manage.

My latest from Wegmans ($10.99): Nugget Nectar x2, Erdinger Weissbier, FW Union Jack, Otra Vez, and GL Eliot Ness. All beers I've never had before so a nice little sampling (the main reason I do it). This is not the best example of a great deal, but I think the price is reasonable for trying new beers. Plus, my main objective is generally not to get the best deal possible, it's to try new beers without committing to a 6pk. That being said, Beer geeks like us know the pricing of most beer, so it's pretty easy to get a nice deal if that's what the goal is.

$10.99 here. Only one store in town that does this and you have to select from their singles cooler. I have gotten some good mix 6 packs of stuff like FBS, Squatters Hop Rising, Dirty Bastard, and some cool imports.

I get mixed sixes from Wilbur's Total Bev in Fort Collins occasionally. $9.99 isn't bad for 6 different beers. You have to check the dates carefully as some of the singles get pretty old, but you can find good stuff if you pick through it. I just got Little Sumpin Sumpin Extra, Brown Shugga', Stone Cali Belgique, Deshutes Jubeale, and a few others.

Several stores in Minneapolis do this they sell them as singles and if you mix 6 you get 10% off the total of six, never really found anything stellar, but like the idea of trying just 1 of a new brew instead of 4 or 6.

I like them because it's a good way to try something without committing to a six pack, although I've rarely found anything great sold this way.I also always wonder if they're using this method to get rid of out of date and/or slow moving product.

I like mixed sixes simply to try new beers I dont want to, or am afraid to, purchase a full 6x of. That being said nothing too crazy shows up here, and the shelves are usually a cemetary for old beer.

The annoying thing with one local food store chain is that they have the bottles assorted on a cooler shelf in racked rows. You open the door, and then have to try to pick through them when the ones you want might be 2-8 bottles back and you'd have to take the front ones out to even see them. This would be an interesting method if the front ones were all ones you might want, but of course they never are. No thanks!
