I am excited for this one. See, these are the types of beers I get excited about. Not a new barrel aged or sour something or another, but a great easy drinking new offering from arguably one of the best brewers in the world. Can't wait to get my hands on some of this!

"In Germany it will begin appearing April 23, the Reinheitsgebot anniversary, but you may see it sooner in American shops and bars."

We may get a chance to drink this beer before the German beer drinkers? Awesome!!

    Cheers!

I'll have to check this out for sure. Haven't had a bad beer from Weihenstephaner yet.

That is what I was thinking. It is not often that we get something in the states before the country it originates from, especially when they are halfway around the world!

    It better be fresh then!

One of the two reasons I was excited when I read this.

    1) A Kellerbier from Weihenstephan

    2) A hopefully guaranteed FRESH beer from Weihenstephan. Not too many Kellerbiers on the shelf where I shop.

    Freshness will be key.

If I see the Weihenstephaner, it's an automatic buy.
    The Uerige beer sounds interesting.
It's too bad that Freigeist is finding an identity in collaborations and odd ingredients (rather than the comparatively more modest approach seen in their earlier beers), but whatever works for them is cool.

    Yes!!

I wonder how long the situation will be true that the beers are fresh. I suspect that about a year or so from now all that will see in my local beer stores are old 1516 Kellerbier (like the old Weihenstephaner beers on the shelves today).:slight_frown:

    Cheers!

Have you had the chance to drink any Freigeist beers? I have had about 6-8 different brands of Freigeist beers and I have enjoyed drinking every one of them. In particular I like the unfiltered Kolsch they make.

And the Sticke Alt he brews is OUTSTANDING!!

"Beer No. 3: Freigeist Bierkultur Hoppeditz

This beer is a Sticke Alt that was brewed in Koln (Cologne). This is only the second time that I have had an Alt that was brewed in Koln. I asked the bartender about this and he educated me that Freigeist means Free Spirit in German. This beer was OUTSTANDING! In the parlance of Tony (BA boddhitree) this beer was WOW-WOW-WOW. There was so much complexity in this beer. There were some subtle smoke flavors but tons of dark malt flavors going on simultaneously: toasty, woody, licorice, toffee … plus some spice & a tiny bit of fruitiness. There is so much going on here (in a good way) that I can’t really do justice to this beer in describing it. This beer has more layers then Shreik! This beer is worthy of a review by Tony. I am sure that Tony would appreciate the complexity of this beer."

    Cheers!

Yeah, I'm a fan. I could be wrong, but it seems like they've taken a turn in their approach. More collaborations and odd ingredients. Less history. At least it feels that way.

Yeah, I do not disagree with you here. A beer bar local to me (Teresa's Next Door) collaboratively brewed a Mango Gose beer with Sebastian Sauer in Germany. One of the guys told me how many mangoes he peeled for this batch of beer but I can't recall the number right now. I had a glass of this beer at the bar and I thought it was OK; I posted about it in a prior thread:

"Last evening I had a collaborative beer brewed by Friegeist (Sebastian Sauer) and 2cabecas and my local beer bar Teresa’s Next Door. The beer was ‘branded’ as Freigeist/2cabecas/Teresa's Eau De Janeiro. It is a Gose brewed with Mangos. The beer looked like Mango Juice (turbid) and tasted like Mango Juice with some tartness. I drank the one beer and I thought it was good but I had zero desire to order a second one."

Hmm. Those images of the Bechers on the bottling line don't look very Keller-like.
    Hmm. An "innovative Kellerbier? :grinning:

As was detailed in the article: “…in fact the beer is centrifuged to a precise degree, leaving only faint haze in its orange-amber color…”

    Cheers!

I am excited to try this. I have only had a few kellerbiers and I hope Weihenstaphaner helps put some perspective on the style for me. +1 for the picture in the article of blue crate after blue crate of Weihenstaphaner bottles.

I'm looking forward to trying this. Arcobraus' Zwickelbier is a favorite of mine and Weihenstaphaner always does a great job.

I'll certainly try anything that they brew.

I wonder where the source comes from - I saw nothing on German or American social media from them about this beer in the last few months. Press release in Freising, perhaps?
