Here is an odd question I would like to pose to those in the know on beer. I heard about the cool cascading head effect on the nitro beers and decided to give them a shot. I started with a Boddington's Pub Ale and was a bit disappointed. The beer just tasted flat to me and I figured maybe it had been sitting on the shelf for a while. Then I heard about Sam Adams new nitros and I got a bit excited. So I bought the white ale and the coffee stout from Sam and the nitro IPA from Guinness.
Me and the wife sat down to give these three new nitros a shot. Again I walk away disappointed. I was actually a bit burned over the price paid for the two four packs of Sams. Here is the deal, they all had the characteristic of the beer they were going for but again had that flat taste. Is it just me or is there something to this odd flat taste? Just curious if I was hitting this right or going around the bend like Colonel Kurtz.

This is standard for nitro beers. You are accustomed to the mouthfeel of CO2, so nitro feels like a disappointment. Go into trying these beers with the expectation of a more smooth mouthfeel and you will enjoy them more. Personally, I much prefer CO2

Nitro is always a huge disappointment. Now you know, and don't need to ever try one again.

Left Hand's nitro beers are great, but I don't think they will be much different than the ones you tried.

Thanks for the replies! I really could not get over that odd flat beer taste and was worried it was just my oddness and that I was not getting the whole thing.

I was very disappointed in the Sam Adams Nitro series as well as the Guiness Nitro IPA, I'm too condition to CO2, I guess

Count me among the disappointed. I grabbed a 4-pack of the Sam Adams Nitro IPA and after drinking two of them, I have my doubts if I'll be able to finish the pack. Just gross.

OP, Im with you. Not a fan of the beers you mentioned. Seems like a bunch of marketing hype to me. I dont want an ipa to be "creamy" or any beer for that matter.

I'm not a huge fan of the canned/bottled nitro beers myself; however on draft? All for it!

Here in Boston, Guinness is very popular, being an Irish immigrant destination since the potato famine. Start there. Guinness on tap is great, and yes the mouth feel is quite different.

I've always thought Nitro beers on tap and from cans taste pretty much the same.
They all taste flat and bland compared to CO2 carbonated beers.

It really seems disappointing after laying out the cash for these beers. I just really cannot stand that flat beer taste. It is interesting to see that others are having the same experience.

I like Left Hand's Nitro Milk Stout and Nitro Coffee Porter. I think the peculiar flatness of nitro goes well with the creaminess of these beers. But with other styles I don't think I would like it.

Try Left Hand's Wake Up Dead (RIS on nitro). The nitro adds a bit of sweetness which is nice for something like a porter or stout.

Irish car bombs have never been better as well.

Founder's Rubaeus and Oatmeal Stout (both available on nitro at certain pubs/bars) make a delicious mix. Kind of like a black forest cake dessert beer.

Stay away from that Nitro IPA from Guinness, that stuff was horrible.

You all have to take nitro for what it is. No, it's not going to be as flavorful as CO2. I vastly prefer CO2 myself. But every once in a while I have a great nitro beer and I love it for what it is. Guinness while always be enjoyable to me, and, more recently, I really liked Left Hand's Hard Wired. You have to enjoy it for its creaminess and smoothness. If you don't like it, that's okay, but I don't think it should be compared to regularly carbonated beer.

Anyone else tried the Sam Adams Nitro series? For my money, a nitro IPA sounded awful, but a nitro stout and wit sounded interesting enough. Verdict? Worth trying?

I enjoyed the coffee stout (I would have enjoyed a non coffee version better, but whatta you gonna do ). The flavor was clean and clear, and it was smooth and very drinkable. That's the only one I got, though.

I had Founders Nitro Centennial IPA last night on draft. I was actually going to start a thread about Nitro beers to see what others thought but you beat me to it. I thought the beer was really good. It is a nice change from the CO2 and makes for a smooth taste and was easily drinkable (most beers from Founders are). I had a couple Nitro beers in the past, I think you may just need to find the right beer. Nitro might not go well with all beers. A local brewery just stated they were going to start doing this to one of their milk stouts and I cannot wait to try it.

I second the idea that Nitro on tap is far better than in a can. I recently tried the Sam Adams Nitro IPA and was not overly impressed. Better than the guinness but then again so is almost any beer out on the market. I am looking forward to trying their coffee stout after hearing some good reviews. The only time I enjoyed any nitro IPA was on draft.
