Fremont Brewing was selling cases of their Summer Ale bombers for $20. Not the freshest, but damn that was cheap.

To clear up a misunderstanding you seem to entertain, John:

I do not own the store, I did not decide on the mystery box policy, and I do not fill the boxes. I just work there. All I've been offering to your questions is conjecture (as I said). Make of it what you will.

That's generally been my experience as well. However, TrueP makes a pretty case for his store, suggesting that there might be some other reason as well.

If this is all just conjecture on your part, then why state the following:

"When packaging is broken, we CANNOT sell the product as is. Mystery boxes are the only way we can sell that product."

That doesn't sound like someone voicing an opinion. That sounds like someone in the know, who is explaining local ordinance or policy.

The tone of your post lead me to the conclusion that you were probably the owner of the store. My apologies for the misunderstanding.

@haknort did you ever RECEIVE the "make-up" beers from CBK/Moe? Would love to know what was in that box, or any other recent BA Mystery Box from them.

Yes, much closer than I initially thought. Maybe I would have a beer with you, after all.

I get your take on it. I guess I'm just one who likes the fun of an unknown (albeit in a context where there isn't really anything to lose). I'm not very reckless, so these are my outlets. WATCH OUT FOR THIS GUY.

Oh, man, what a great way to get rid of an incredibly crappy beer. I laughed when I saw that this was included in the box.

Tried to order Mystery Sour Box #2 today, got to check out and it wouldn't continue, I put in all my info and shipping, added shipping then clicked continue, it reloaded to the same exact screen every time. I re-loaded and now it says sold out. I clicked on it right when I got the email and then didn't let me order. Oh well.

Here in Los Angeles, there would be a 10% sales tax on it, so it would be $182.60. Still not looking like a great deal, but if you accounted for marking up each bottle a dollar or so, it's in the high end of what's out there in retail-land.

Still, there's nothing in there all that great. And Indian Wells? (shiver) The worst craft beer I have ever tasted. Consistently.

Not quite the same thing, but in a similar vein, I've bought a mystery cigar halloween package a couple of times, I was disappointed each time. It sure looked like inventory clearance. I avoid mystery packages like the plague now, I don't care how much flowery language they wrap it up in. It's a mystery for a reason.
