Why did I find 120 minute?

While hunting for the much-hyped Sunday Morning Stout last week I asked a local store owner, as I normally do, what he had behind the counter. To my surprise, he said he had just received some 120 minute. This is odd, right? I figured I would've heard about distribution around town. Haven't seen it anywhere else since.

We'll leave the debate as to whether or not 120 is a novelty beer for another thread; my question is a.) is 120 being distributed currently and b.) if not, why would it just pop up?

This is very odd. It certainly isn't fresh, 120 isn't slated for release until April.

There is some 120 minute IPA in my town. Single 12 oz. bottles. It might be old since it isn't a well frequented store.

Maybe selling his private stash for whatever reason.

120 is not going to go bad and it gets better as it sits, the heat dies down. It gets released 2x's / year. (April and September) Maybe it was sitting around for some strange reason at the distributor?

What was the price he wanted? 120 is a superior/excellent barleywine /Old Ale (whatever you want to classify it as an 18% ABV brew) and it ages very well. If it's $10 or less for the 12oz bottle, I'd consider buying it, just to have a high quality beer for a decent price. Who cares about whether its a VIP customer only beer sold under the counter.

    Either :
    1) He's had it for awhile and hasn't sold it.
    2) Had it and forgot about it.
3.) just got some from the distributor
    4) Some other reason none of us are going to know

    So did you buy it?
Did you ever find Sunday Morning Stout?

I hate when someone leaves the ending out of a story.

True, 120 Minute is an IPA but it is really hot when fresh. You could treat this beer as a Barleywine I suppose, as I have had a 2011 120 Minute recently on tap and it was better than any other 120 I have had.
Having said that, I would have passed it by under the circumstances you explained. I don't usually like a whole lot of mystery involved in where my beer comes from.

I would assume they were from last year. I just got rid of the last few of mine.

DFH 120 is actually one of the only IIPA's that I really like, and only when it's been aged. I'd buy as many as I was allowed to buy (usually limited to one or two per person in Wisconsin which is where I must go to buy DFH beers) as long as it's not more than $10-12 per bottle.

I've been to stores where I'm pretty confident that the owner says "just got this in last week" about virtually every beer they're trying to sell . It may have just been some BS to try and entice you a little more. I'll echo everyone else though and say the age isn't that important.

My bad. I bought it. It was overpriced at $15 ::feels the shaming eyes of other members who would've passed:: I also did find some overpriced $5/bottle SMS. ::feels more shaming eyes::

I'm pleased to read this, as a couple of days ago I found an old bottle without a label in the back of my fridge, and a bit more investigation revealed a 120 Minutes label without a bottle in there too. So I purchased it at least three years ago. Could be rough, but I suppose such a high-ABV beer would be rough for me regardless.

You should be thankful that you found one!

But if the seller lets you, buy all of them! :grinning:

I have gotten them at the brewery for a $5 glass fill. When I ask if I could have another they smiled! :grinning: Needless to say, after four free samples (of other beers [wink wink] inferios beers [wink wink]), I did not push it! :grinning:

Yeah that is odd, I had to get some in a trade because it doesn't come to Cali. I think it has something to do with the label for Cali laws I read somewhere but that could be BS. I thought it was pretty good fresh but just a ok Barleywine after a year or so on the shelf.

I wish DFH would just print the year on the label, so there is not this risk of the bottle date rubbing off the neck of the bottle. Any brewery that promotes cellaring their beer should at least do that.....
