Why is "collecting" beer so offensive to many BAs?

There is always someone cooler than you. Keep that in mind, and life gets a lot easier.

Some people are just selfish douchebags.

Also, why in the world would the brewery let one asshole buy 96 bottles? Bad business move as probably a lot of pissed off people in line. What brewery is this and what is the beer?

Personally, and I think a lot of people can relate to this, I just find it disappointing when I can't find a beer and so-and-so has a half dozen of them. For example, Abraxas, it's made in the state I was born in, raised in, and still reside in, yet I've never been blessed enough to try it, let alone even see it in person. I then try to trade for Abraxas and get these ridiculous requests.

Now that I have acquired one sought after beer (Sump), I've found that it is difficult to let them go.... I luckily managed to acquire about a half dozen, consumed one, and traded away the rest, with one still residing in my cellar. I do have a tough time giving it up.

So as disappointed as I am that some manage to collect a sum of rare bottles, I know it's difficult to trade them away. Especially if they stood out in the cold or rain or packed up the family for a "vacation" to pick some up. For this reason, I try not to give anyone crap for hoarding bottles. Instead, I try to focus on myself, reducing my hoarding tendencies, and sharing more.

96?!?! That's insane. Also, the brewery needs a bottle limit.

It's a brewery problem, they should have set a two bottle limit, and let the them get back in line as long as there's beer. I'd be pissed to be 10th in line and get shut out because some asshole bought 96. I'd never give them another dime of my money either.

I only drink Abraxas on tap these days. A few years ago, I got a bottle. I doubt I'll ever get one again.

I did find Sump on tap, which is when I came to the conclusion I could let go of my other bottle. Now I just hope they can swing Abraxas. For me, I more-so just want to try it. I've heard it's bleh compared to the hype, but I'd like to experience it myself

I love it, but I like chilies in a stout. Some people don't like that.

I joined this forum recently to learn.....and learn I have......who knew there were beer hoarders......

You'd think that after 65 years I wouldn't be surprised by hypocrisy. greed. and petty behavior but clearly...I'm a slow learner.....

I think I'll head over to the Rimfire forum and listen to the guys that line up in the mornings to clear all the 22 LR ammo off of the shelves at Wall Mart bicker......

    Later......

Folks above seem to have this issue covered. Humility and the Golden Rule do seem to be a good combination with many applications. Back when U2 was just starting to be a big hit, a friend wanted tickets for himself and a buddy. The limit was four per person. He had class and was unable to stand on line, so I got the two tickets he wanted, and none for myself. (kinda kick myself now) but the point is; there is nothing wrong with consuming what we want/need, and, by being respectful of others wants/needs, we will likely find that the world will be a better place.

I don't really mind too much but I can see that when people are out buying cases of exclusive beer and hoarding, less people get to try it. Not sure if every exclusive beer should have a bottle limit or what, but I can see that as a problem. More for the few means less for the many.

I'm just trying to build my cellar so I'm always drinking it down with 1 year of age. I've finally made it, I have 2 days left in Feb, and starting in March I'll have 2 beers in the cellar that I bought in March 2015. I'll finally made my goal. With that said I don't have overstock I can't work through, I only have 1-3 big ABV or sour beers marked with my sharpie that I bought in 2015 for any given month. So all I need to do is get together with my beer nerd friends and share those bottles a few times a month and no hoarding or overstocked cellar. I simply cellar to see what beers would be like with some age on them or to do a vertical. I always try to sample 1 fresh first however before I stash one away for a year.

The way I see it, with regards to trading rare beers, its not a bad thing, we are in essecence spreading around the distribution of beer where without trading there is no distribution. Sure it makes it tougher for the local person to have quantity access to the local limited release beer, but until that brewer either expands production or widens distribution, trading amongst beer nerds acts as the distribution network to further reaching people.

My only pet peeve with trading forum, is that it seems almost exclusive to the super-rare / super hard to get beers is all people want. No one locals for locals or wants easy to get/decent to great beers from a small distribution brewery far away. That's kinda annoying IMO.

This, except for the getting back in line part. Set a limit. I'm of the opinion that once you hit your limit leave the rest for other folks. Even if the beer is available over multiple days. A local brewery recently had a release. The day of I bought less than the limit. Got home tried a couple and decided it was good enough to pickup some more. Went back the next day and did get more, but the total I got was still within the limit set by the brewery.

It's not a case of being offended by what anyone does with their beer. I honestly don't care at all what someone does with it once they buy it, it's their property. It's just that I don't understand the mindset. What the hell good is beer that you don't drink? But, like I said, knock yourself out. I don't care.

Personally I try to buy 2 or 3 bottles of the rare beers I want. That way I can have a front and back end of a 3 year vertical. (And maybe a middle). Am I tempted to hoard rare stuff just so I can get more rare stuff? Sure Lord knows I want to try BCBC variants, KBS, Black Tuesday and all these other talked about beers. But my cellar is about 75 bottles (mostly high abv, with some lambics and gueze. I also have a few sours I am holding on to for the warmer weather.) I'm not going to give up 2/3 of my cellar just to get a couple of xtra-rare beers. I would rather enjoy my verticals of kind of rare beers with my friends.

I love collecting beer because it feels so good to open my 'special' cabinet on a friday night and being able to choose what awesome beer I'm going to drink . I don't want a selection of hundreds of beers, but I want to choose between 20 or 30 different ones and know it's going to be good :stuck_out_tongue:.
