Maybe it's because you have too many aliases. You've been called both Greg and Rich in this thread.

So, which one is it Bill? What d'ya say, Mike? Everyone has finally caught onto you.

You know what, though, seriously - I've been trading for roughly two years, and it's damn near impossible to even look at the trading forums now. I know - I'm beating a dead horse.

Good trading partners is the way to go - don't give up on us yet, Frank!

trading isn't even close to cost-effective when packages do make it - worse when they are lost. that's why i hung it up a long time ago and just drink local.

but you really shouldn't end on such a poor note. your last experience with it shouldn't leave such a bitter taste in your mouth.

There are so many good local beers and more and more available via online order that I'm thinking about this too (with a couple exceptions). The cost is a factor but more importantly it seems like I really enjoy only about 1/3 of the trades I complete (for various reasons).

I love trading, though I've scaled back substantially in the last year or so.

If you look at it in purely monetary terms, it's not worth it.

But I've met some marvelous people. Some just on-line that I exchange messages with, some from halfway across the country that I've had beers with, & lots of locals that I drink with now. Plus, I'm drinking a Uinta Labyrinth right now, came as an extra, & it's bloody fantastic. I'd never have had it otherwise.

Trading isn't just about the beer.

I actually do work 2 full time jobs, so I trade all the time. When I go back down to 1 job I am not sure if I will be trading at all.

I'm pretty sure after the 2 boxes I ship on Tuesday I'll hanging up the FedEx account as well. Just not as fun as it was 4/5 years ago. Most want a kings ransom for an "average" but limited beer. Not worth it anymore.

Two years ago I publicly vowed I would restrict myself to 8 trades / year. I think I broke that limit in the first month.

Trading isn't a financial thing. It's a social thing. I've met many great people through trading / muling, and that's worth more than the occasional lost box.

That being said, I pretty much stick to a handful of people now, and for the sake of my liver and closet, I've been trying to clamp down on those, too. It helps that I almost never look at the trade forum.

I have somewhat gone cold turkey for three reasons.

First, I am no longer "near" my cellar. I may sporadically go back to where it is located, but I don't have ready access to it in order to trade it away for other things.

Secondly, I moved downtown and where I live there are no real "good" beer stores within walking distance. I now don't have the time to trek around to other stores in search of limited releases and what not.

Third, I have given up drinking during the week (well, Sun-Thurs). Looking back, it is crazy how much I would consume during the week. Yikes.

These three factors have saved me (after finally looking at old beer store and fedex receipts and what not, as painful as it was) no joke, probably $100 a week on average, if not more. That definitely adds up...

Nothing like a new school loan to make you stop "wasting" your spending money on beer/beer related expenditures.

I have to concur with Arbitrator. I personally have never made a trade, but I love to follow the trade forum and its discussions. The relationships that are built through the trading process seem to be worth way more than an occasional lost box.

I hope you end up with your lost box and it redeems your faith in the process.

The new trade forum has slowed me down. Every time I shoot a BM I hear that the trade has been closed. The fact that the forum is locked and the OPs don't edit when the trade is done wastes so much time. Maybe it's a blessing and a curse.
