New Beer Sunday (week 575)

Hey what's going on?!

What a gorgeous day today, much needed too. Went out in the yard and got much garden and planting work going. I got stuff growing indoors and I am crossing my fingers for a good growing season as well!

Had a great day yesterday enjoying Péché Mortel day down at Churchkey. What a blast! Excellent low key atmosphere and just world class brews.. so much of it as well to take in real nice and easy.

I am finally inside washing the dirt of and down to some new brews!

What's new for our hero today?!?

Hoppy Ki Yay - Lonerider Brewing Company

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Best before June 29th 2016.

Amber orange to red body color, with solid clarity. Very fine carbonation, really creeping slowly through the glass. Head creation manages just over two fingers with a light white head, and some retention. Good cascading sheets of lace along the side of the glass, adding up for a real nice visual appearance.

Hop aroma manages for a mix of caramel malt and the hop basics on the nose. Sticky weed and earth with a hint of dank make a nice addition to the malt sweetness. Not a real hop forward brew but a good mix of caramel, hint of sweet biscuit, and dank make for a pleasurable experience.

Palate settles for more basic bitterness and leaving typical dry hopping blasts behind. Sugary malt and almost tea like flavors in the mid palate, but lots of sweet caramel. Sticky dank earth tones compliment nicely, with a slightly syrup body. Some biscuity and cookie flavors come out on the finish with some herbal tannic tea hop like qualities as well.

Not bad, but definitely focused more on amber and a dank profile. Works well, but nothing crazy impressive either.

Working on dinner, and realizing I am forgetting about the Academy Awards later today. USed to be a huge film nut seeing many films a years, but this year I have really hardly seen anything and I mean ANYTHING (heck I still haven't even seen the new Star Wars flick..).

But anyway the best actor goes to me.. cause I am awesome

With the pup asleep after some visitors to tire her out, I'm back for another that I'm curious to try. While I don't worship at the Three Floyd's alter, I do occasionally binge on their products when they pique my interest. I'm popping the cap on a bomber of Hopped in Half Pilsner from a recent stop. The bottle is dated 2-9-16 and I'm pouring this no abv. listed brew in my Three Floyd's Teku. Hey, it's Sunday, gonna get fancy!

Pours a sparkling and brilliant transparent deep gold leaving a generous two fingers of soapy white foam. The aroma is cereal grain, bread, floral esters and some mild citrus/melon. Flavor is once again cereal-bread forward with floral and mild citrus qualities in the finish. The feel is very crisp, clean and refreshing like a quality pilsner.

This one is definitely not normal for Three Floyd's as it's probably hopped in 'quarter' rather than half. Joking aside, I find it a refreshing and sessionable change of pace to the high abv. hop monsters. I didn't hold any of that against it in my score which was a 4.06 / r/Dev -0.2%.

My first NBS post!

Big tasty brew. Got about half way through when I realized it was 12%.

A nice looking brew, used to my coffee beers being dark. Color is orange with a thin slightly off-white head that quickly settles to a ring around the glass. Not much in the line of lacing.

Aroma is all out coffee, deep, rich and strong. There is a hint of sweetness and a bit of vanilla, giving it a "creamy" quality.

The flavor is pretty similar to the taste. Big coffee bang up front with subtle sweetness, bitterness, and a touch of roasted malt giving it some smoky and chocolate characteristics. The strong coffee flavor does a good job of covering up the high ABV.

Mouth feel is surprisingly light, but has a bit of syrupyness. Moderate carbonation.

Overall it is an impressive brew. It tastes like a cold "regular coffee". A strong cup, but coffee for sure.

Speaking of coffee, here are a few pics from yesterday, they were new to me yesterday, but I didn't have a chance to post in WBAYDN.

Tried all six of the Peche Mortel variants at the Three Penny Taproom in Montpelier's Peche Mortel Day. All great. The peach was surprisingly nice.

New Wee Heavy/Scotch Ale Sunday.

Evenin' NBSers, with special salutations to you seekers of special Scotch Ales or weary wary weighers of the merits of Wee Heavies.

Well not surprisingly there were lots of chores on the "honey-do" list today, some had been accumulating for quite a while just waiting for a day like today. It was very springlike here today with lots of sunshine and temperatures near 60. Made me really begin to doubt the calendar.

We'd had a family member here for a one night visit and lots of good conversation over a couple of beers last evening. Once we got him off on his way I starting finishing off some furniture repair and made another pass through the yard picking up sticks and branches that had fallen during the last wind storms. My wife and I did manage take a break to get in a bit of a walk in the sun while doing some window shopping at the nearest business district to where we live.

This evening's new beer is the Wee Heavy Scotch Ale (Kilt Flasher) from The Devil's Backbone down in Virginia. Not too long ago I got a gift of a six pack that included a few singles and 3 bottles of the Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager. This Wee Heavy being the longest lived of the four different beers now finishes off that six pack.

Quite honestly this is an good beer but not one I'll be going out of my way to find in the future. Both the Traquair House described above and the Traquair Jacobite are much more enjoyable, more complex and better balanced beers. The Kilt Flasher has several of the right flavors/aromas and other qualities (carmel, toffee, dark orchard fruit, and earthy hops) but doesn't seem to me to work quite as well as some of the other Wee Heavies I've had. (On the other hand if Devil's Backbone was my local, nobody would have to twist my arm to get me to have more of this beer. )

Earlier @lordofthewiens mentioned he'd be going to a performance of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte where his niece had one of the leading roles. That opera by Mozart has in it what some pros regard as being one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed.

So earlier today lordoftheweins was listening to his niece sing in this Trio from the first act of the opera (and if his niece sings even half as well as the two female leads in this performance she will have a bright future).

I went to Canton on Saturday. It wasn't bad at all. There was maybe 30 people in front of me. May have even been less and I got there at about 11:30. The lines went fairly quick considering they only had one line for growlers and bottles until Artaic ran out. There was also a 2 bottle limit on Artaic which probably deterred some of the mules and people looking to trade what they get.
