Chris, did you read Jim's (@Starkbier) post above: "...sure Pils is more hoppy & bitter than Schwarzbier..."?

If you drank the beer you referenced and they instead labeled it as being a Schwarzbier but it was more hoppy/bitter then you expect for this style of beer, how would you feel about that?

    Cheers!

P.S. I would recommend that you give SBC Pils Noir a try. That beer does not taste like a Schwarzbier to my palate.

I've seen some pretty funny posts on here, but I think this one takes the cake.

    Hard Ice Cream Ales!

Hot on the heels of the Hard Soda craze, and not content to let New Belguim and Ben&Jerrys have all the fun. Ruggles and Edy's will get on the bandwagon to grow their business by making such gems as Hard Mint Chocolate Chip, Hard Moose Tracks, and Hard Rocky Road. Available in the frozen sections of your local stores.

See Weihenstephaner Vitus. Although more similar beers would be nice too, as long as they are just as good.

I think at some point these mega companies are going to want to ring in the profits so its going to come down to quality at the end of the day and who can produce the most quality on a consistent basis. but my guess is a beer that is highly addictive that people can't live without (that heroin beer) vs the most healthy beer man can make.

It's called "hate the brewery not the beer."

Michael Jackson also made the same wordplay in his first Simon & Schuster Pocket Guide to Beer [1986] after Falstaff shutdown Narragansett-Cranston, RI and moved the brewing of Ballantine IPA to their Ft. Wayne brewery.

I bought that beer in Vancouver once solely because of the name.

No disagreement here regarding any of your points (haven't had the Pils Noir). My point is that people probably give pilsners and porters greater flexibility than they do Schwarzbiers... and this might be because there are simply far less Schwarzbiers on the market that we use to paint the picture. There's varying degrees of hoppy bitterness across the "pilsner" spectrum. Is there a greater willingness to release a "black pilsner" rather than a "hoppy Schwarzbier?" Either word combination matches a more sellable beer term with a less sellable one.

Hmm, that is an intriguing question. Maybe some beer industry marketing type person would have an opinion here.

Shane (@Sixpoint) I recognize that you are not a fan of labeling beers via beer styles but if you were to produce a black lager that is hoppy (both from a bittering and flavor/aroma perspective) and little to no roast malt flavors would you be more inclined to use the description of Black Pilsner or Hoppy Schwartzbier?

    Cheers!

I would probably opt for Black Pilsner, if those were my only two choices.

BBA IPA......I really like the oak barrel IPA but not had a BBA IPA.

Would love more mainstream Lemon grass/ginger beers.......

Brett IPA and Pale Ale.......I like Wild Devil and LOVE Fear of a Brett planet......those are the only 2 I have seen.

This year seems to be Tangerine......ST has a great Tangerine peel beer I had last year

    Enjoy
