I think this is an excellent point. They've been open all of what? Two months?

As you mentioned, a lot of places experience growing pains the first few months they're open, and sometimes that can last for up to a year, before everything is straightened out.

If you don't like the price don't buy it, it's that simple.

You're not out there complaining about apple products marked up 1200%

I'll gladly go this weekend and pay whatever they charge, if I really like it i'll probably pay it again. If I don't then i'll go somewhere else.

I'll comment how I see fit, thanks. For comparison I took a look at Hill Farmstead's current lineup:

    • Edward: American Pale Ale 5.2% abv ($7/$15)
    • Citra Single Hop: American Pale Ale brewed excluively with Citra hops. 5% abv ($7/$15)
    • Works of Love: Hoppy blonde ale with Earl Grey Tea. 3.8% abv ($7/$15)
    • Everett: American Robust Porter. 7.2% abv ($8/$16)
    • Excursions #3: American IPA featuring Equinox hops. 6% abv ($8/$16)
    • Legitimacy: American IPA brewed with 2-row malted barley, oats, and citrusy hops from the Pacific Northwest. 6% abv ($8/$16)
    • Society & Solitude #6:Imperial Pale Ale brewed almost exclusively with Mosaic hops from the Pacific Northwest. 8% abv ($10/$22)
A 32oz fill of Great Notion's DIPA is more than every 64oz fill at Hill Farmstead outside of 1 beer.

I'm still baffled by this comment by Great Notion "We're not charging anything that out of line though with what we're seeing at our favorite breweries in neighboring states."

No offense, but statements like this one drive me nuts. This is a forum to discuss beer, and that includes prices. Sometimes people act as if message boards should be a cheer leading section instead of a place of discussion. Discussion is both the good and the bad. I do agree that people should cut them some slack as they've not been open long, but if someone wants to discuss it, what's the harm?

You couldn't possibly know whether people are complaining about this or not.

In the just gone quarter Apple sold 74.779 million iPhones and made $51.635 billion in revenue from those sales. In the same quarter of 2015, Apple sold slightly fewer units: 74.468 million and made revenue of $51.182 billion.

I've been there twice. I had good service both times, and really didn't bat an eye at the prices. The beer is solid, which to me is impressive for a brand new brewery, let alone a brand new brewery with two non-pro brewers manning the system. Still need to try Juice Box, so I may stop in at the event tomorrow.

You clearly don't read appleadvocate.

But we aren't talking about their overall sales numbers. You accused people here of not being out there "complaining" about Apple mark ups. You have no way of knowing if people here on this forum, who you directed that message toward, are out there "complaining". That kind of comment is the equivalent of the folks who claim that those of us who swear off AB products line up for BCBS anyway. Such a notion is generally stated with zero proof, or rather faulty proof, such as sales numbers. Sorta like this one.

This is my take as well. I agree we're all free to decide for ourselves whether the price is too high or not (and giving them continued business, or not, certainly seems like a good way to the let the folks at GN know our feelings), but the NW BA forum certainly seems like a good place to express our viewpoint on the issue. The issue/topic has certainly come up for plenty of other breweries/pubs in the PDX area, so why not GN?

Also, one of the things that's often remarked about in this forum, is just how inexpensive prices generally are in the PDX area. That being the case, discussion of GN's prices (at least with respect to their crowler and growler prices) certainly seems to me to be an appropriate (and interesting) topic for discussion.

One thing for sure.... this continued discussion certainly is doing no harm to their bottom line. If anything, it sounds like folks are more interested than ever in trying their beers. I know I am (and am still hoping to stop by tonight).

Yeah, I'm definitely going to be excited to try their stuff. I really appreciate that they've taken part in this thread and informed us of their point of view, and given us background on them. I like the story behind the brewery.

What I won't do is buy a $15 crowler. I absolutely respect their decision to price it this way, but the way I see it, if I buy it at that price I'm advocating that price. And I 100% believe that is the road for higher prices from all breweries in the region. They'll see that GN can command those prices and raise their own.

It seems to me that they have been unable to produce as much as has been demanded, which is probably why the growler/crowler prices are higher. Maybe they're just trying to curb the to go sales. I mean the fact that they were only able to have one IPA on tap when I visited tells me it clearly has been a struggle. I personally don't get a lot of Growler fills so it's not really an issue for me. $5 or $6 for a pint/ glass seems reasonable enough for a place trying to make quality beers and that is just getting started.

FYI, Intergalactic Hop Shop is on tap at Market of Choice in Beaverton. $11 for 64oz.

It's because Intergalactic Hop Shop doesn't use the finest high-quality ingredients, obviously.

This. I was thinking 'what a bunch of whiners' until I remembered how much different the pricing is compared to Seattle. I sometimes forget what an expensive city this is.

I've heard from numerous brewers how Portlandians are super cheap tight wads...

A nice write up. Sales appear steady at current pricing. It will take some time for supply/demand, incorporating pricing, to balance. I look forward to trying more of their offerings. So far I have only had Ripe and thought it was a tasty change of pace. I wish them much success. Seems like a great addition to these here parts.
