Was at Singlecut today. Had a great time. Place was packed, they were woefully underprepared to handle the crowds today.

You are correct. I don't expect "cheap" but for comparison a Treehouse DIPA is $4.25 for 16 oz and Singlecut (when I was in NYC) was $6.99 + tax and bottle deposit (~$8 for 16.9 oz).

Apples and Oranges here. You are comparing NYC prices with the rest of the world.

We can agree to disagree. Other Half is less per oz than Singlecut and many other very good beers available in NYC are too...BP Sculpin, FW Union/double/wookey Jack, Finback, Otter Creek, Troegs, Pipeworks, etc all sell very good IPAs in NYC that retail for less than Singlecut.

...that said, whenever I'm in NYC I make sure to bring some Singlecut back to FL.

I too saw singlecut in PA over the weekend. A friend of mine gifted me a bottle of DARL and Fullstack. Both were excellent, full stack was a huge WOW beer for my wife so I grabbed another bottle for her. But..... they were $8 a bottle. As good as a beer is, its hard to justify $8 a bottle for an IPA. I feel the same about Maine Beer Co. Another One is one of my favorite beers, but I don't get it much. Not to say SC and MBC beers aren't worth it, cause they probably are(to me at least). But breweries like Treehouse or Other Half put out stuff as good for much less per ounce.

SingleCut brews are my newest beer obsession. I can't believe they just got on my radar like 6 months ago.

The brewery/tasting room sits right behind my union hall - didn't know much about them until I stopped in after a job a while back - I was pleasantly surprised by the beers I'd ordered and I like the 'scene' - live music on weekends and little kids and pets welcome - outdoor (sidewalk) seating when the weather is nice - good stuff in bottles - awesome when it's fresh at the brewbar - way off the beaten path in a mostly industrial section of Astoria -

A bit sad they moved away from the lagering as I really enjoyed what they did on that front. I also enjoyed all the kettle sours I had from them. I assume they are doing those less as well. Ideally, they'd find a way to do the awesome IPAs and still put out good lagers and other stuff from time to time. I think @ecpho would agree with me.

Hard-to-read bottling dates? My problem is I CAN'T FIND bottling dates. When you're visiting NYC and have no clue what's been most recently bottled, this completely hinders any purchasing. I just go for what's on tap.

I saw this a few places but passed on it. Honestly, making an English Strong Ale and then adding brett sounds to me like a beer that got infected and they ran with it. If you say it's really worth it, I'll give it a run soon.

I saw Full Stack too at both Milk and Honey locations in Manhattan last week. Must be one of the more recent releases.

Once upon a time all English Ales had brett in them so it may well have been a deliberate attempt to recreate an historical recipe.

Edit: In fact it seems that was the trigger for the discovery of Brettanomyces, spoilage of English Ales.

I love singlecut! I always assumed they were mostly local, but I see from the OP that they've hit PA.

Yes to their kettled sours! I'll take a Raspberry Sour Lagrrr anyday.

If you're staring at the label, the bottling date is printed vertically along the right edge of the label. I know there have been issues with this in the past, but they've been more consistent since December. With that said though, they're often pretty smudged and require some guesswork.

Haha, you might be totally right about that infection. The description in the leadup to their 3rd anniversary event was, "A first chance to taste of our anniversary exclusive: NIGEL Pride of Squatney Strong Ale, an 11% Barleywine that was aged for TWO years and then inoculated with multiple Brett wild yeast strains for a secondary fermentation." I guess I just assumed inoculated implied deliberate, but that might just be as you said, running with it! It's also a tad steep in price imo.

I went to the Singlecut ribbon cutting on their grand opening in December 2012. Love that place. Billy Full Stack and Bon Bon 2XTNT are two of the best IIPAS to come out of NYC. No question.

Singlecut are probably my second favorite NY-based brewery behind Grimm. Billy-Full Stack and Mo' Shuggie Soulbender stack up really well with any of the best IPAs on the east-coast. Heavy Boots of Lead is also an absolutely killer chocolate imperial stout.

The apples and oranges referred to your comparison of a Treehouse IPA [not available in NYC, as far as I know] to Singlecut purchased in NYC. Now that you've changed the comparison, everything but Pipeworks is available in 12 oz. format. That's why it's cheaper. It's the 22 oz. format that makes Singlecut expensive. And I would like to know where you find Pipeworks less than Singlecut since I'll be visiting in NYC next month.

Not NYC, but the shop I referenced earlier had Lizard King for $3.60 and Close Encounter for $4.10.

I will add that neither was as good as some of the stuff I've had from Singlecut. I'll probably pass them up in the future, just too much great local/regional beers these days! Who can keep up?

The prices you quote are per can, I hope. If not, please tell me where. And you're absolutely correct - there's so much beer to choose from, it's difficult to keep up. But we can still keep trying. So....it's time to do so.

Last I was in NYC in December, I bought 4 packs of Lizard King and Close Encounters at Top Hops on the LES. If I recall, a 4 pack of 16 oz cans was $16 total or $4/16 oz. As stated above Singlecut bottles are 16.9 oz
