If you want "super hop smelling and tasting," you might want to look at moving some of those bittering hops later in the boil, or after the boil.

This is an extract Fort Point Pale Ale recipe I brew recently. I think you'll be much happier w/ the results of something like this

    6 75% DME. Golden Light, Briess 43
    1 13% DME, Wheat, Muntons 44
    0.25 3% Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L 35
    0.5 6% Carapils 30
0.25 3% Sucrose (Table Sugar) 46(you can take this or leave it. I bumped up the ABV a tiny bit to get in line)

    Boil Hops
Hop Type (L/P) Ounces Minutes AA% AA% Override IBUs
    Columbus P 0.2 40 17.7 16.4 8.8
    Columbus P 0.65 10 17.7 16.4 11.9

    Flameout/Whirlpool/Hopstand Hops
Hop Type (L/P) Ounces Avg Temp Minutes AA% AA% Override +IBUs
    Columbus P 2 180 20 17.7 12.5 18.8

    Dry Hops

    Citra P 4oz Primary 5 days

Trillium beers are not bitter in the least. I would suspect most of their hop additions are not done full boil but late and post boil.

I for one look forward to the follow-up post asking why your beer turned out horribly.

People keep trying to give you sound advice, but none of it sinks in. So, you're either happily trolling away - or you simply don't WANT advice in the first place.

    Best of luck.

    fixed that for you

I do like your approach of going back to extract…I would just be sure to keep a keen eye on not adding to much bittering hops and watching your process for all the hops adding at the end of the boil and in dry hops. If trillium truly is your hero brewery, than you'd know from JC that he love Columbus hops in boil and then the super aromatic hops like Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy (to name a few) mainly as dry hops. And I will give a little plug…it's loaded with good recipes including the FPPA:

Lmao hey, don't feel bad for me! I appreciate all of the advice, both positive and negative, and I'm for sure taking it all in. No, I will not go back to brewing with a kit because I, unlike those of you throwing out negative energy, know myself. I know my capabilities and my understanding of brewing. No matter how negative someone is on this thread, I still read, digest, and react the best way I know how. I'm staying positive and open minded. I read the chapter on hops from a book someone suggested and plan on getting fully entrenched in the literature. But I'm not brewing alone. I have two buddies, one of whom knows more than I do, helping to run the show! Based on the four solid beers we brewed before this, two of which were amazing including our grapefruit IPA, something tells me we'll be just fine.

Again, much appreciated on the positive and negative comments; the fact you took time to read and offer advice is much appreciated. I will follow up in about 3 weeks!!

No one is suggesting a kit (or at least I did not notice).

Google the difference between bittering and flavor hops or reread that chapter in How to Brew that was linked above.

Here is a basic starting point for 5 gallons

    6# Extra Light DME
If you want bitter like Stone Ruination use 1oz of Centennial at 60 mins
If you want lots of flavor and not bitter, then use .25oz at 60 mins

If you want lots of flavors and aroma use the Centennial and Citra at 10 mins and later. Play with actual additions using a calculator. Aim for a total of 60 IBUs.

    He probably means this:

I think she has a valid point, but....you know... it's hard to find an extract kit with 180+IBU.

I'd cut your 60 minute addition to no more than 1oz with the rest between 15 and 0 with a flame out hopstand/whirlpool to 170 then start chilling.
    Dry hop at least 3oz.

I've followed this thread as well as the OP's other recent threads, mostly for entertainment purposes. I did think he was a troll at one point in time, but agree with you now that it is unlikely. If he is a troll, he should get an award, or something. My opinion at this point in time is that he is a novice brewer who thinks he knows more than he actually does, and refuses to listen to constructive feedback but merely wants affirmation of his POV. Why he posts on a homebrew forum asking for advise but constantly rejecting it, I don't know. I do agree that he has a long road ahead, but would bet he aborts the hobby sometime shortly.

Based on your comments, amazing initial recipe and totally realistic goal of a Trillium type beer, it's obvious your understanding of brewing is far too advanced for a kit beer. I apologize for suggesting a kit beer. They don't even make a Trillium kit beer. What was I thinking?

I agree and I think it is compounded by this
so no need to actually listen to what we are saying, he already has expert advice

With that said, I hope the OP takes all of our well intentioned advice to heart and realizes that we actually want to help him make good beer.

“A little learning is a dangerous thing
Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.
Fired at first sight with what the muse imparts,
In fearless youth we tempt the heights of arts
While from the bounded level of our mind
Short views we take nor see the lengths behind
But more advanced behold with strange surprise,
New distant scenes of endless science rise!”
