Good, bad or indifferent, I was offering my viewpoint on why we see these articles. Like it or not we are coming to a crossroads of freedom of choice v. being "guided" towards what folks think we should eat / drink. Wasn't' too long ago that eggs were going to kill us all. Same with coffee. Same with pork. Same with beef. I could go on.... It's a damn shame that we as a nation are basically viewed upon by our government as just being too stupid to take care of ourselves. Sure, there ARE folks in that category but legislating to the lowest common denominator kind of sucks for the rest of us, don't you think?

And as far as "eliminating" companies that produce horrible health damaging foods, that's a pretty slippery slope - especially on a beer forum. Remember prohibition at all? That was about "eliminating" a "horrible" product.

Edit* @StoutElk_92 I agree in principle with several things you said, but I find more fear than most in what passes as regulations and limits set forth by people just as easily corrupted as the ones letting corporations run wild. That's why I've always been a proponent of less government anything - because people suck and always will suck (not you of course, you seem very nice). I'd rather take my chances on making all my own decisions.

Edit* 2.0 - @meefmoff I removed my politically charged statement in order to keep the thread well within topic. Sorry, just burping up some angst. Carry on, nothing to see here....

There's a difference between natural and artificially colored/flavored processed hfcs food and drinks.. You could probably even throw BMC into the later category. Prohibition wasn't because beer was bad, it was for the same corporate protocol to choose what we can have, instead of letting small businesses boom across the country. A lot of people can't help themselves because we've been lied to so much we don't know what to believe. Science has come some way though recently to show us what is true vs bs. My personal philosophy is usually natural vs artificial. I like my food and drinks natural, not with extra chemicals that are going to damage my health.

just went to the doc for a checkup, she said no more than three beers in a session, I asked her what the abv would be and she was really throw back at first as I believe no one had ever asked her... she was thinking of a 12oz Bud Light and I was sure I could never throw back that many bombers at once of Big Bad Baptist

I think that there are a ton of genetic and physiological factors that make a universal limit mostly useless. You can come up with a laundry list of reasons why it doesn't apply to you.

    I can't remember the last time I had a 4.0% ABV beer.
    Yes this, exactly this.

So such delightful natural products as hydrogen cyanide and botulism toxin are good for us ?
There's no evidence at all that natural products are any healthier for us.

Not everything natural is good for us, as there are poisonous things in nature. I just mean food and drinks you see at the supermarket. I should probably just emphasize that artificial colors, flavors, and many other things typical in american foods like high fructose corn syrup, etc. are bad for you. If a doctor or scientist says something is bad for you they usually have evidence to back it up, so we should probably take the WHO serious, at least to some extent and not judge every scientist as a blasphemer against what is true. People make mistakes, and truth usually prevails. I think the doctors are right when they say processed foods, artificial foods, and things with certain harmful ingredients that we know of are indeed bad for you. Quality craft beer is not included here, unless they use artificial ingredients, which the real craft brewers do not. Also these health guidelines are just recommendations not mandates from them. You can still drink as much as you want and consume as much hfcs as you please, just don't say no one warned you.

Sooner or later, I'm going to die of something. I choose to die of good beer. And, if I can do it while smoking a cigarette, so much the better.

I would not read articles and read actual studies. Read them in detail, looking at sample sizes, which genders/ages were used, and how many units were consumed in these studies. Then compare them to yourself and your life style and make a calculated educated decision from there.

And of course, as has already been stated, each individual is different. Simply because one group in a study suggests one outcome, this does not guarantee it will apply to you. Does this take more time than asking random people on an internet forum, or reading a generalized article? Yes. But it's also far more useful.

But, if you're really lazy, I wouldn't even bother asking the internet, just use common sense. Drinking 14 units in a single session, repeatedly, is likely over taxing your liver (there's plenty of research on that I'm sure). You may or may not be able to handle chronically abusing your own liver, no one can predict that with 100% accuracy.

I should make it clear that I'm absolutely not after definitive advice or guidance on this. I merely wondered what other's thought.

And common sense is all well and good... until the 8th beer of the night. :astonished:

Oh ok, well, those are my thoughts!

Sorry, I hope my post didn't come off as insulting. You're in the UK I see too, nothing wrong with 8 imperial pints of a fine cask mild in my opinion either.

Michael Pollan calls those kinds of things "nutritionism" and I think he's got it pretty well figured out. We all know that drinking could have some side effects to our physical health. Personally, not drinking would have a pretty big effect on my mental health so I'm gonna take my chances until given good reason to stop*

*Anything short of liver damage probably wouldn't count as a good enough reason to me

Well, that certainly would be news to all the participants in the Temperance movement, both before Prohibition and now.
