“There was nothing really as glorious as a good beer shit—I mean after drinking twenty or twenty-five beers the night before. The odor of a beer shit like that spread all around and stayed for a good hour-and-a-half. It made you realize that you were really alive.” Charles Bukowski—Ham on Rye, 1982
Unfortunately not a Bukowski quote: http://bukowskiforum.com/threads/find-what-you-love-and-let-it-kill-you.7288/
It's tough, cause before I really knew anything about him I kinda liked his writing. I know it's important to separate art from artist, but I just can't really do that. Once something is out of the bag I can't forget it. Likewise though, there is nothing better than finding out your favorite artist, be it a painter, musician, writer or brewmaster (to stay relevant) is a really great person. Makes enjoying that persons work all the more rewarding.
Yeah, but A) he's dead, so buying his work isn't supporting an asshole B) buying his work won't change what he did, and C) it's really great literature. Catcher in the Rye for adults.
Why choose one over the other? Can't speak for everyone but I have enough time in my life to enjoy both.
Love Bukowski's raw honesty in his depictions. He had some problems but who doesn't. Post office maybe my favorite book.
