You missed the entire point about "off the shelf", though I'm only guessing at that, because I can't read the language you've posted in...

what I was getting at is that off the shelf stuff from Surly, New Glarus, Russian River, or Lost Abbey, its worth more than off the shelf locals from here in NC. It boils down to the quality of the beer in the bottle. Off the shelf is a term relating to the location where you got it, not the quality of the liquid in the bottle.

Maybe everyone needs to quit thinking their crappy beers are so damn great.

This. Last week someone asked me if I could send them a Black Tuesday for a Syx and a Brux.

I'm not sure what side of that example I'm supposed to care about.

the brux part is a little odd. was brux really that hard to track down in CA... where its 2 collaborator brewers are located?

Dude is in DC though. Either way, it wasn't very hard to find here as well.

I'm just sayin', BT is increasingly plentiful (in sucky-ness) each year and Surly Syx will, for the most part, only be brewed once.

ah i see. strangely assumed BT = cali, but obviously that's not a licensed inference.

anyway, i agree with general "meh"ing at stuff like this. if you don't like an offer, just don't take it.

also, while i agree that lots of dumb hail mary offers cluttering the forum aren't a good thing, with the way trading seems to be going (particularly open market trading), you really need to assume the role of responsible consumer if you give a shit about getting ripped off. it's obvious to everyone that the majority of new traders seem to be (and have been for awhile now) people who lose their shit when they miraculously find a "whale", and who then subsequently auction it as hard as they can, all the while trying to bag further "whales" with pedestrian beers.

that being the case, if it bothers you when someone offers you something less rare than your beer, it's up to you to keep abreast of what's rare, what's in demand, etc etc etc (preferably WITHOUT starting a thread "GUYS HOW VALUABLE IS MY BEER????" AKA "i'm trying to get ripped off / rip someone off, can someone else please make this happen for me?").

...and if you're trying to get into trading just to share beer, try locals you wouldn't try otherwise, have good interactions with other BAs, and get hooked up with far away special releases in exchange for the local special releases you can manage to acquire, your main guide should be turning your brain on when negotiating with people. if someone's like, "well, you ought to give me more because [etc]," you need to be savvy enough to realize that this isn't the person you're going to be having a "great trader thread" lovefest with in a couple months.

Seriously? Syx with those fairly poor ratings and Brux available on the shelf pretty much everywhere. I understand BT is one of the most hated beers on BA but I think that is totally unfair. I wouldn't even trade a DL for that combo even though I'd be coming out ahead in $.

    HAHA

You talk about BT being "hated" then use DL as your example of a beer you wouldn't trade?

While we're at it.... I wouldn't even trade a White Birch.... There, I said it, bold statement time!!!

Off-the-shelf is clearly in the process of being redefined by (the beer geek) society. Any butthurt you may feel is the same that Ding experienced when we bastardized 'session beer'.

Maybe if someone really wanted to try Syx, but I doubt that is a trade that would happen very often. The Surly anniversary beers aren't even close to level of Darkness. Both in terms of hype and taste. It just seems like people have been trying to trade Syx as if it were Darkness. The BA trade value equation of taste/ratings/rarity/hype just isn't there for Syx.

Yeah some people do still try to command a ton for BT, although lots of people here just try to "trade up" on every single trade regardless. Personally I liked the 2011 BT better than 2010. I am considering dropping my RS membership next year anyway. Too much money getting the RS beers, then that leads to a bunch of trading which costs even more money. I make good money, and my wife actually enjoys trading too, but I can find more productive things to spend the money on...

I really don't think so, but could be because I hated Syx and love BT. So who knows? Maybe it would happen, but I doubt it.

I think people are getting to wrapped around this Syx example. My post was referring to how the meaning of the term "off the shelf" seems to be changing. Rempo may have it right, I am just feeling the growing pains in the BA world.

Yeah some beers like IST, Cafe Royale, Olde Bluehair, Black OPS, etc. are also good examples. They are usually a pain in the ass to get, but don't really trade that high.

mm, though honestly, the reason they don't trade for sought after brewery only beers is not that they can be bought on the shelf(:.

"off the shelf" insofar as it's a useful term doesn't really refer to beers like that. they're as off the shelf as BCBS and its variants, but they're less in demand. the reason behind this is pretty self-evident... black OPS, for example, while it was a bit of a pioneer (other people were already doing BA stouts--and better--but not many), i don't think many people would seriously say is comparable to BCBS in terms of quality.
