    New American Blonde Ale Sunday

Hello all! Chilly (40's) and rainy/overcast here in Milwaukee today. Today's brew is from New Belgium - Hoppy Blonde. I enjoyed it very much. For a blonde ale it was excellent - pushed towards a solid pale ale. Although on the the subtle side (as expected for the style), it had quite a bit "going on". Nice fruity/slightly floral hops balanced nicely alongside the sweet malt. Keeping the style in mind, I scored the appearance a 4.5 and all other categories 4.25 - resulting in 4.27 (higher than current average of 4.04. If you are looking for a light brew that still has a great overall character and nice hop and malt profiles, I certainly would recommend this one!

Nice! Love the Uerige Sticke Alt, rarely see it in my neck of the woods. It's awesome you can brew a version of it.

I have never had the pleasure to see this beer. I am guessing that you had it on draft?

    http://www.bunitedint.com/information/brands/description/1/

I was going to post that I have no idea how close by homebrewed Sticke Alt is to the Uerige version but based upon the descriptions on the above linked page the Uerige Sticke Alt does indeed 'read' to be very similar to my homebrewed version. I particularly like the description that Michael Jackson has for this beer:

    **** Michael Jackson’s Pocket Guide to Beer, p 36:
“Düsseldorfer Altbier is one of Germany’s great beer styles. Uerige Alt is in my view the finest example of the style, and one of Germany’s truly great beers. I love it for its big, spicy hop aroma; its firm, malty, middle; and its confidently dry, appetising, finish. No short cuts, no compromises: a beer that punches it weight. Zum Uerige Sticke beautifully retains this balance. It is smooth, complex, elegant and a wonderful aperitif. A generous beer, with a touch of luxury.”

The unusual name derives from olden days, when the guests would whisper ("stickum" being a dialect term for whispering) that the master brewer must have been a little too generous when weighing out the ingredients.

Not that I can remember, though I did first encounter the alt as a style in Germany. Once upon a time, the old Viking Tavern had the Uerige Sticke in their then-incredible bottled beer selection, and I've come across it at a couple higher end bottle shops over the years.

I missed on the B. United website:

    “Case 24 * 11.2oz. Flip Cap Bottle(s) 0 62067 02855 7”

So it does appear that the Uerige Sticke Alt is imported in bottles. I have never seen this beer in any of my local beer stores. I suppose you would indeed need a “higher end bottle shop” to make the effort to obtain this beer.

I suppose I should stop ‘slumming’ when I do my beer shopping!?!:flushed:

    Cheers!

I've come to believe that whatever <insert German beer style>, Chuckanut makes a nice/great/fucking spectacular example of it. Eagerly awaiting their attempt at an Eisbock...

and it was exceptional. I also think I've seen it in Total Wine. Definitely worth swinging by when you are in the area.

Victory produced an Alt to celebrate their 10th year anniversary (which was 10 years ago) that they called Ten Year Alt. It was a higher gravity (higher ABV) beer so a Sticke Alt IMO. This particular release was in bottles and draft; I bought a case of the bottles.

This commercially brewed beer was my inspiration to ‘kick it up a notch’ in my homebrewed Altbiers.

As part of their overall 20th Anniversary they re-produced this beer and made it available on draft at the Downingtown, PA brewpub a month ago (February 2016). I had the pleasure of drinking a couple of pints of this beer at the brewpub.

    Cheers!

    “Ten Years Alt

    Altbier

A completely unique hoppy, dark ale. Constructed from the traditional alt beers of Dusseldorf, Ten Years Alt ventures into all new realms with profound malt depth and bright, burnished hop notes. A full, brassy nose of noble German and Czech hops announces this flavor-loaded ale. Slowly, the dark roasted malts gain the upper hand to bring a harmonious conclusion to this robust, but comfortable beer. Brewed to commemorate our 10th anniversary, Ten Years Alt is back to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

    Composition

Malt: Pilsner, Caramel Malt, Carafa III

    Hops: Tettnang, Spalt Select

    ABV: 7.8%”

Beautiful day here in N of Boston. Just came back from a great walk thru historic Concord, the main street is super cool with old school businesses and the row of historic houses is nice to stroll thru. Of course, with all that strolling I worked up quite a thirst.
Todays beer is a new IPA from Spencer, a Trappist brewery and the first in the US. They had previously only made a Trappist Ale, until recently when they have made a Holiday Ale and a Stout. The IPA I had low expectations for, especially in the hazy juicy hop crazy environment we live in here in the NE. It pours clear golden, no OJ haze for this, and smell is sweet hops and malt. Taste is actually refreshing and reminds me of the beginning of the IPA movement here before TH and Trillium took the scene over. Nice hop kick balanced with a sweet dry malt backbone, almost caramel like. This is a easy sipper, and although I wouldn't invest in a full 6 pack, it was a great one time offering.
Cheers, and enjoy the awesome weather!

Michael, either you have the knowledge of specialty shops or overall NY is so much better from a retail perspective (including pricing) than PA.

In PA due to our 'peculiar' alcohol laws we do not have a lot of retailers to buy from. The principle retailer is called a beer distributor which is a warehouse building that sells beer mostly by the case (and as of 2015 12-packs). There are some retailers that sells bottles and 4/6 packs but the state restricts/limits the number of licenses for these types of establishments so there is limited competition.

I do occasionally visit the Total Wine & More in Claymont, DE. It is quite a haul in a direction I do not go for any other reason except to shop there (for wine more so than beer). I have never seen Uerige Sticke Alt there.

Maybe @RobH can help be locate some Uerige Sticke Alt?

    Cheers!

New American IIPA Sunday (week 577)
Greetings NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. What a crazy fucking weekend of work, holy shit, not at all used to spring cleaning in March. Overtopped a 40 yarder with steel in two days!

Another warm day in a winter that stands as the warmest in my 63 years, with no other winter even a close second. Wonderful. And scary. We may have broken the weather.

One thing that ain't broken is this beer from Parish Brewing. I hate to insult Louisiana folks when I say that I have tried a number of beers from the two best of years past, Abita, and Tin Roof, and the best I had of those was barely a meh. This is a new day, though, and this beer, Ghost in the Machine, is a world class hop masterpiece. Complex aroma, perfect mouthfeel, and a wonderful clean hop profile that sparkles in the mouth. Soooooo good.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!
