My only entry today is this decent Pilsner. The pour was a clear golden a one inch white fluffy head. Lacing was light and faded quickly to a thin layer replenished by the nucleated glass. The nose was light and clean with the typical bready malts. The taste was that of a lightly hoppy bready malt and consistent all the way throught the palate. Carbonation was on the light side and the mouthfeel was fairly thin. Overall this is a pretty average pilsener with the typical characteristics. It will do in a pinch if you need a reasonably priced non macro pilsner.

Part of my NBS BIF box sent by @thebeers. I'm jumping the official NBS BIF Review in order to drink these fresh hops. Best by 18August16 stamped on the bottom of the can. Still good in 5 months, is that possible?

Poured into tulip. Small 1 finger head that disappears quickly leaving tiny bubbles around the outside of the beer. Beautiful golden with amber highlights.

Smell is sweet, grapefruit, floral, grass.

Sweet, lots of grapefruit, tangerine, citrus. Definitely my kind of DIPA. Lots of flavor, balanced and very drinkable especially for the high alcohol. Mouthfeel is spot on.

    A great beer. Love it.

There have been some changes at the brewery, so bear that in mind. That said, I love this beer! Anybody who has ever read my reviews, or talked to me, or whatever, knows that I tend to understate things. By a lot. I haven't had this recently, but, IMHO, this is the rare beer that meets, and even exceeds, the hyperbole.

Cheers all! Just got back from an extra long shift at the bike shop today, and am enjoying this before heading to band practice. Finally get to try some Jackie O's!

Too tired to do a full review right now but the vanilla is just perfect. Not overpowering the brew, but enough to make is presence known. I could've used some more coffee but I'm a coffee freak. Overall absolutely fantastic brew! Cheers all!

New Brewery Only Release DIPA Sunday! Yeah...sorry I've been absent.

I went to @gillagorilla house and had a few Great Beers with him. He went to RaR yesterday and scored a Four pack, and two Crowlers of some Brewery only shit because I had to work yesterday. So today I am enjoying the fruits of his labor... The New Brew is this!

For starters this label is Bad-Ass! Let's get down to business though! You guys see she Pours Excellent Deep Copper Body with a nice soapy white head. She is a Beaut to look at I tell you what!

The aroma should tell us what to expect. This smells like my "Smoke Center"! Huge Fruity Mango and Citrus (Blood Orange and Grapefruit pith) dominate first. Background of Dense Marijuana. This is a Hop Head's Wet Dream, all jokes aside. It's rich and so refreshing smelling.

The Flavah? This first hits the palate with a clean malt sweetness that turns the coat quickly to a Hop Assault! Fresh Hop oils hit with that Mango and Citric fruitiness that flows with a clean Cedar sap Slap on the tongue. Mid palate flows some Grapefruit Zest that's dry and pithy. Nice Clean Finish with lingering Dank Mango and Marijuana Herbalness. The lingering aftertaste is just an assault of Hoppy Goodness. The feel on the palate is medium light with nice Scrubbing Carbonation.

Overall: This juice is Slamming! Those who are fapping to the Northeast Style DIPAs, this juice is just as easy in competition! The beer isn't truly balanced the Hop Oils shine forth first but the Malt is there for support. It's an easy drinker for its heavy ABV. If I traded for this or got it as an extra, I wouldn't be disappointed...not at all. This Juice is delicious. This Brew is Recommended.

    Grade: an easy A

    Cheers my Fellow NBS crew!

    New Beer Sunday!

Since I normally have weekends off from my graduate program, it kinda feels like my spring break really starts tomorrow. Sunday nights mean new episodes of The Walking Dead, and I figured this beer would be appropriate for not only the TV show, but how I will feel in the morning after finishing a bomber of a 10.2% beer so (relatively) late in the day. I am living about 2hrs away from my hometown for school, but I have a "cellar" spot in said hometown that acts as both overflow for my ever-growing beer collection in my apartment, and for special occasion drinking whenever I return. his weekend I am back in my hometown, and for NBS I broke out this 2013 bomber that I unintentionally aged.

Thus far, this brew had exceeded my expectations. It is dark fruit dominant in both the nose and the flavor. The usual stout roastiness shows up front as a rich and chocolaty note, and on the finish as a coffee-like note. The finish still has some remnants of hops, which lend a little citric aspect that plays a role in the coffee notes. The texture is semi-refreshing for the style, but still hearty and with a little swishing becomes quite viscous. It is smooth and drinkable, but still rich enough to savor. I have never had this fresh, but it seems as if the aging has served this beer well. I am really enjoying this, and if it wasn't for the 22oz format, I might buy this again.

    Cheers, BA!

Good evening NBS'ers! Tuesday on Sunday for me...Been wanting to try this for a while, and finally got a hold of some!

So Happens It's Tuesday 2016 Edition

Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels 14% ABV
    The Bruery

Pours a pure black with a sustaining slight tan ring. Nose, vanilla, brown sugar, raisin with a decent amount of bourbon. First sip, like the nose, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruit with caramel a tad of coconut, with an outstanding tobacco-like, woody bourbon finish that is quite balanced for the 14% ABV. The feel is creamy, almost the flavors peaking before the slight bourbon heat supplying a delicious big finish. Overall, I love this beer. The blend of everything I love is present here and I especially enjoy the exceptional bourbon flavor without it flooding everything else. This is without a doubt a sipper and each sip is becoming even better than the last as it warms. I think some might enjoy this after it's been aging for a while, but i love it as is because the flavors compliment each other nicely and the bourbon is just right.

I am somewhat new to The Bruery, this was on the higher end of the price scale, but I have no problem buying this again. Cheers!

You should check out their Anniversary Old Ales. This juice is Great and Rich...but those BA Old Ales are on a spectrum all their own. Just about anything Patrick puts in a Barrel is Gold (if it's not infected).

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @utopiajane for getting us started off today. I got my car checked out yesterday and its going to be a bit expensive to fix, but the car as a whole has had good durability for it's mileage. I will get an estimate this week sometime. Here are today's new beers:

Really nice. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, ginger, light pepper, and pine; with some light caramel/bready malt balance and herbal/floral/grassy hop/ginger spice earthiness. Moderate pine/herbal/spicy bitterness; very smooth finish; moderately sticky with light bready creaminess in the mouthfeel. Medium carbonation/body. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness. Very well balanced between hop, fruit, and ginger spice notes. Nothing overdone at all, very well executed. Very enjoyable. Seems like they went with mostly basic C hops for this one, which is a fine idea. Balanced the fruit/spice notes with citrus/piney hop character; without adding too much additional complexity. 3.78
    [IMG]

Really damn good sour. Aromas and flavors of big tart lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, peach, pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, mango, melon, hay, straw, grass, and light white vinegar/musty funk; with some moderate wheat/crackery malt and light peppery yeast. Light-moderate fruity/acidic tartness and yeast spice on the finish; very smooth/balanced finish; fairly acidic mouthfeel with some light wheat creaminess as well. Light-moderate dryness from the acidity. Highly drinkable with the lighter acidity, with a lot of lovely fruity complexity coming from both the yeast and the hop varieties. As expected, this is probably just the base beer for the "of Tarts" series of beers; but dry hopped instead. This is kettle soured beer, so don't expect anything overly funky; but it is extremely delicious and complex otherwise. Wouldn't mind grabbing another. 4
    [IMG]

Great smoked porter! Not quite opaque brown; crystal clarity, and great head retention/lacing. Aromas and flavors of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, caramel, toasted dark bread, and light vanilla/char; with some herbal/peppery hops and slight hints of dark fruits. Herbal hop/roasted bittersweet balanced finish; medium bodied; fairly creamy with light sticky/chalky notes in the mouthfeel from roast malt and hops. Very smooth finish, minimal warming ABV. Touch of dryness. Really quite huge on the woody smoke presence; but still nicely balanced against the roasty/bready malts. Almost rauchbier level smoke. Love it. 4.1

Understood. When I read @cavedave review, I started seeing a discrepancy. That is why I wont do a formal review until I sample it again. It should hit on a lot of notes I like, and while satisfying, my perception is too far off compared to other comments. By no stretch a "bad" beer, but I feel unsure of myself at this point.

I haven't had a lot of them, but whenever I've had a Belgian stout (and they always seem high enough octane to qualify for "Imperial" status), I've always been very impressed. I've never had this particular one, but I'll keep a lookout for it.

Tagged "Best Consumed By March 10th... Consumed on March 13th.

Pours a hazy golden apple cider hue. Slightly loose head rised up nicely. White. Quickly recedes to an insignificant afterthought. But thankfully it pumps out some serious aroma...Mosaic. Grassy, some onion.
Flavor is a mix of more subtle onion, grass, pine, a slight citrus zest, and some really beautiful mineral rich water undertones as well. Slightly creamy in the mouthfeel and finished dry.

So, for you, it's a howler? Interesting how there is no clear agreement on the name. In my neck of the woods it's typically "grunt," though I've heard "howler," "mini-growler," and "growlette." I've wondered if there's a geographic component to this.

The beer itself sounds rather tasty, btw.

Your artifacts are impressive. I'd love to find some regional gems. In particular, I'm jealous of a couple items at the local watering hole the Viking Tavern. They have some things on the walls there that are probably irreplaceable, including some Schade Brewing stuff (local brewery shuttered by prohibition. The brewery is now an office complex. There are rumors to this day that the basement is full of antique brewing apparatus).
